Who: Dominick Alexander and Caroline West
What: Delivering Natalie's letter.
Where: Lisbeth's apartment in Mosebacke, Sweden
When: 9:00 AM, Christmas Eve
Warnings: Aaaangst.
Caroline West was still asleep when Dominick stepped out of her dreams. He didn't linger there long – just long enough to find her. Anything more would have felt like an invasion, especially in the wake of Sara's death. She never would have wanted that – Caroline was off limits. Period. It pained him to cross that boundary. To know that Caroline dreamed in Swedish. He told himself it was unavoidable. This was the easiest way to deliver the letter. Also the most cowardly. But he'd deal with his guilt later.
As he looked down on Caroline's sleeping form, he couldn't help but blame himself for the death of her sister. Part of him had always known that Sara – Natalie, rather – would never get the peace she deserved, but he had never done anything to help her, either. He was in too deep for that, and so was she. At least Caroline had the option of staying out of this bullshit war, though he doubted she would. Not now. Thanks to Sara's dream thieves, Caroline remembered her sister now, remembered everything they used to be, and that would hurt most of all. He wished he could spare her that pain. But no. That wasn't his choice to make.
Silently, he set the letter on Caroline's pillow. She would see it as soon as she woke. Attached was a note of his own – a simple apology, without a signature. That was the best way to keep her away from Leo, just like Sara wanted. Caroline could never know him.
He smiled sadly as she scoffed in her sleep. Sara had the same habit. "You look like her," he whispered finally. "I'm sorry." And then, he was gone.
