When: December 22, 2010
Where: The Baker House Museum, London, England
Warnings: None. Except maybe extreme happiness?
Samuel and Tumnus were having a blast showing Maribeth around the museum. Out of all the places that he felt at home, it would probably be at the Baker House. He knew the story of nearly every object that was housed inside of these old brick walls- from the paintings to the clothes to the toys, he knew it all like he knew the back of his hand. And he enjoyed nothing quite so much as to share his love for this place with someone who was willing to listen- and the fact that Maribeth wanted to listen made him feel a little giddy.
Their first meeting at the Spare Oom in Paris had gone extremely well, he thought. It hardly felt like a first meeting- it was more like they were just seeing each other again after a while apart. Yes, their friendship wasn’t yet as smooth or as strong as Lucy’s and Tumnus’ was, but he knew it wouldn’t take them long to reach that same point. The week between their next visit had dragged by very slowly for Samuel, though he tried his best to keep busy with Christmas shopping, keeping Duke from running off outside, getting things organized and ready at work, and other such things. But it still went far too slowly for his tastes. Still, it mattered little. She was here now, and that was what counted.
Thankfully they’d managed to avoid Myrtle all day. Despite Myrtle accepting the apology cake without smashing it into his face, he still wasn’t entirely sure that she’d entirely forgiven him, and he’d hate for her to blow up at him in front of Maribeth. That would have been incredibly embarrassing. He’d already shown her most of the museum- even his office. There were just a few backrooms they needed to pop by, and then they’d be done. And the next one of those rooms was the Green Room, or as he liked to call it now, The Wardrobe Room.
Ever since the Pevensie girls had brought up talk of going into Narnia and the possibility that this wardrobe might be the one, he’d been more wary of it then ever. It wasn’t that he didn’t want to go back to Narnia- far from it! It’s just that he didn't want to be disappointed if he turned out to be wrong- and it wasn't exactly like he had a streak of good fortune. Minus meeting Maribeth, but that was different. But fate did tend to move in mysterious ways… Still, he tried to tell himself that it wasn’t it. He would hope for the best, but expect the worst.
“And this,” Samuel said as he and Maribeth walked into the small, windowless room, “is where we keep some of the larger bits of furniture- mostly because they couldn’t go anywhere else. Technically they should be upstairs, but the elevator isn’t big enough to take them, so we put them back in instead.” He gestured past the large wooden bed and cluster of overstuffed chairs and to the wardrobe sitting quietly in the corner. “That’s the er, wardrobe. The one I told you about that gave me so much trouble, and that Paige and Edith seem to suspect might be the wardrobe.” He glanced back and forth between Maribeth and the wardrobe, feeling a little anxious and expectant. What exactly he was expecting to happen, he wasn’t entirely sure. But it was Lucy. If anyone were to get the wardrobe to work (assuming this was the wardrobe) it would be her.
