Betty Morland, formerly Betty Peabody, didn't sleep much these days. The euphoria surrounding the brief but welcome bliss of her marriage to Phin a few months ago hadn't lasted as long as she would have liked. Her world was completely clouded by violence in a way that only her head mate could relate to, and she'd done the best she could under the circumstances. Being head of Camelot's combat department hadn't exactly prepared her for this, especially when she and her gang were more or less working without a safety net these days.
Camelot Head Quarters had been deserted since before the war 'ended'. When Daniel Morgan had begun to lose himself to his head mate, one of his last acts as leader of Camelot had been to lock down the castle. Inconvenient for those in Camelot who made up the Resistance that were now left with nowhere to run, but it had been smart in keeping his enemies out and ignorant to Camelot's secrets, including that of his own family. Betty and her people had managed. And after her conversation with Holly Strange the other day, it looked like they were back in business, even if it wasn't the same as the Camelot HQ. It would have to do.
Ever since she'd started this little group of renegades, defying CORE every step of the way, Betty and Robin had made it their soul mission to protect everyone in it no matter the cost. Like Robin, her people came first, their lives were more important to her then her own. That's why she'd always insisted on doing the night patrols while everyone else got their rest. She trusted herself to make sure no one was caught off guard while they were asleep, not to say she didn't trust the other people in her gang to do the same job just as well... Well, it was the reincarnate of Robin Hood you were talking about here. She probably didn't trust them to do as good of a job, but she'd never admit it, she just passed it off as being overly efficient and maybe a bit of a control freak. Those that knew her best, namely Phin and her other outlaws Dallas and Rick, knew better then that.
Tonight started out just like any other night. The Resistance was a caravan, they were almost always on the move and never stayed in the same spot twice. They'd holed up in an abandoned homeless shelter on the outskirts of Chicago, planning to leave the city for good the following day and Betty was especially exhausted tonight. So exhausted that leaning against a tree just outside of the area her people were sleeping in, she hadn't realized she'd fallen asleep until she awoke with a start sometime around five thirty in the morning. "Shit," she muttered to herself, immediately springing up from her resting spot and heading out. As the nightwatchman (no pun intended, of course) it was also her job to go out and get food for everyone when they woke up, so that's how she came upon a scene that literally stopped her in her tracks and blink several times before springing into action.
In the near distance was one of Chicago's famous landmarks the Atomic Gate, located in Millennium Park. That wasn't what had stopped her in her tracks though. What stopped her was the all too distinctive sight of two Jedi's locked in a heated light saber battle. As much as Betty didn't want to think it, there was no way at least one of those Jedi's wasn't Abigail Roth, one of her friends and a particularly gung-ho member of Betty's Resistance. Betty sprung into action, launching into the fastest sprint she could possible muster but before she'd even got half way she saw it happen. There was the flash of a light saber going straight through the upper torso area of one and that person went down. The outlaw caught a flash of familiar dark hair and she shouted, her bow and arrow immediately in her hands and ready to shoot, causing the other figure to look up and immediately bolt.
By the time Betty reached the scene it was just the one, the fallen Jedi on the ground, and it only took one look in the dim morning light to recognize Abigail under the cloak she was wearing. The young Jedi was choking on her own blood and wheezing, Betty immediately stooped down and kneeled to take her into her arms. "Don't try to talk, Abi, you're badly wounded. It's okay, I'm here. Everything's going to be fi..." The red head trailed off, swallowing hard against the boldest lie she'd ever told. And they both knew it.
Abigail was shaking in her arms, unable to focus her eyes anywhere and Betty could tell, she knew that look. She'd seen it a thousand times before since this war had kicked off. It hadn't ended. CORE may have won but it was still going, as long as they were still out in the world fighting this war was long from over. But until now, Betty had never had to see one of her own friends die bloody in her arms. "Be-hetty..." Abigail tried to speak, convulsing in the arms of the outlaw, her eyes wide with fear as she felt her life leaving her.
"Save your breath, Abigail. Please. You're not going to die on me now, I'm not going to let you." Betty's voice was sharp and strained, she couldn't stand watching this but she couldn't look away, not when her friend needed her most. She held Abigail tighter, cradling the dark haired Jedi's head in her hand for support as they looked at each other. Abigail was in size a relatively small woman, but nothing had ever felt so tiny and fragile in Betty's arms as Abigail did now.
"T-tell my brother... I lo-" But that was all that Abigail could muster before her chest heaved one last breath, her eyes widened further and Betty thought she could almost visibly see the life exit her body. Or maybe it was just her last breath in the chill of the early morning air. Betty stared down at her fallen friend for a long moment before she cradled Abigail's head to her chest, squeezing her own eyes tight. For the first time since she'd begun fighting this war, she herself started to cry and even Robin couldn't console her.
