It took a lot to get Harper to break from her licensed psychiatrist routine. That was her secret, the only thing she had left. Control. She'd become the reincarnate of Harley Quinn and then kept like an animal in a cage for her troubles, unable to stop what was happening to her. Her control, once taken away, was the only thing she had left now.
That crack in her carefully woven self-restraint showed in the way Harper's facial expression briefly changed from impassive to incredulous in the span of a second. "You're not serious. Your parents named you Jo King?"
A smile nearly threatened to stretch across her whole face at the absurdity before Harper instantly remembered herself and viciously bit it back, as well as the laugh that had been bubbling dangerously in her throat. That was less than professional. Laughing at a patient's given name? Not that this Josephine King was a real patient, but still. C'mon, Harper, you know better than that. Yeah, but it was funny!
The unwelcome interruption of Harley's voice inside her head caused Harper to shudder and she immediately forced herself to refocus, the desire to get this back on track and over with overwhelming now that she felt herself slipping. It had just been a long day, that was all.
"My purpose is merely to assess your qualifications," Harper explained with a delicate throat clearing. "You're already here, so chances are, this is where you'll stay. Unless, of course, I find reason to deem you unfit for the Resistance's ranks." Though honestly, it's not like they were all that picky. If you were unhinged with a penchant for violence? They wanted you. Hard to tell if this woman fit the bill, though.
Looking at Bruce, who was still regarding the other women with a wary interest, Harper flashed Jo an even look over the rim of her glasses. "You don't seem very afraid of wild animals. Many would label that reckless, stemming from a lack of self-preservation instincts or some kind of superiority complex. You don't see the animal as a real threat, or you see yourself as the bigger one. Am I warm?"
