The faint marks on her bare skin suggested she had been lying down before. Judging by the way her body was now curled over itself but not precariously perched, he could only assume she was in her bed. Though for all current appearances, she may as well have been in his. A thought that made him swallow strangely as he gazed at her more openly then he usually did, wondering what felt so different to him about her this time.
Kyle didn't know what he felt like to her, but to him, she was a constant warmth. It was almost unbearable, especially when they were together. A warmth that he resented as much as he marked its absence, it never truly left him but on the days he spent apart from her it was always fainter. It was as if the sun never really set, no matter how hard he tried to block out its rays. She was like the sun, but tonight, her warmth felt somehow less. Still there, but there was something clouding it.
Something was bothering her.
Freya was in bed but she wasn't asleep. Had her thoughts turned to him as his had to her? Is that how the connection had sparked? Kyle's curiosity at the mechanics of their growing and ever changing bond peeked, but curiously, that wasn't what he felt immediately compelled to explore.
He watched the way her face changed, her features only flickering in the smallest of ways but he was looking closely enough to notice. The way she played with the ends of her hair caught his eye and held it for a pause before he fixed his gaze back on hers again. That dismissive wave of her hand was almost as telling as the uncertainty he could feel radiating off her in droves, as much as he suspected she was trying to hide from him.
Kyle didn't know why, but he didn't brush past this moment like he might have when they'd first met. He also didn't immediately follow the impulse to exploit her weaknesses and use them against her, like he would have before. Everything about this moment felt different to him, and he felt different in it. That was unsettling, but he wasn't threatened by this unknown. He felt it calling to him, and he wanted to answer.
After only a moment's hesitation, Kyle stepped forward and sat back down on the edge of his bed facing her now, mere inches apart while not fully intruding on her space. There was no need to impose on her when he could feel her thousands of miles away at any given moment, but it was close enough that he could speak softly, which he did now. "Tell me."
