Tristan had been on edge all week. There was a secret he'd been keeping. Something about himself - about Baal - that he'd been hiding from everyone since day one. His family, his friends, his fans. Even Avery. He didn't feel good about it, but by the time he and Avery met, Tristan had already been hiding who he really was for so long that he didn't know how to be anything else. To do anything else except continue to live the lie he'd been keeping from everyone out of shame since the moment he'd become a reincarnate. Since the moment Tristan had first become a god.
It was the only skeleton in his closet, thankfully, but it was still there, haunting him at every turn.
There is more to him than children's bones. That's what he'd said in that damn article. Max goddamn Landon. The Morrigan himself, him and his emo boyfriend still as much of a pain in Baal's ass as they had been in the last life. The rumors had already started earlier in the week, whispers that Tristan had only caught wind of because his phone was set to Google alerts for his and Baal's names. The media hadn't picked up on it yet, but it would only be a matter of time now, especially with that interview making its rounds on the internet. Of all the times for Miss Loner Goth America 2018 to stick his head out of the sand, it had to be now? The Underground kids never could leave well enough alone.
And now he had to worry about what he was going to say to Avery. For all he knew, Inanna hadn't known the truth about Baal, so this was going to be a rude awakening for both of them, and with so little time left... Finding out the man you loved burned kids as part of a ritual sacrifice that some lying old snake of a woman told you was necessary to stop the Great Darkness? Baal was the type to be suckered into that 'greater good' sort of thinking, but that didn't mean that other people would understand. That didn't mean that Avery would understand, as much as he seemed to accept every other part of who Tristan was. He'd never known about this part. And maybe Tristan hadn't done any of it himself, but he'd still kept the secret like he was just as guilty.
He couldn't worry about that right now, though. Right now, he had to go deal with a different problem. Some part of Tristan knew that stirring up trouble with the goth kids wasn't smart, but the rest of Tristan was too mad to listen. These assholes had been doing nothing but making his life more difficult on purpose since they'd all made themselves known to the world. Tristan spent half his time doing PR cleanup for their sad excuse of a Pantheon thanks to all of the above ground, public scenes the Morrigan and his bitch boy had been doing lately, and now this? Maybe it wasn't smart to pick a fight with the Underworld gods, but Tristan wasn't just any god. He wasn't even the god that everyone thought.
Stopping outside of the entrance into the underground railway station that he knew was theirs, Tristan spread his arms out and issued his challenge. "So do I have to come down there to get you or are you gonna come up here and face me? There's no point in hiding, either way this is happening."
