Kate had been on the road for the better part of two days. She'd managed to hitch a ride from Arkansas to Pennsylvania, a truck driver had taken pity on her after seeing her walking along the side of the highway who turned out to be much more family man than creepy asshole. Kate had had enough exposure to both in the last year, but for a girl with claws in her hands and feet, dealing with a couple of assholes was no problem. She usually just took their money and split. She could have killed them too, it's what she'd been trained to do, after all. But Kate didn't want to be a mindless killer. She was more than that. Whatever kind of animal the facility had tried to turn her into, Kate was self-aware enough now to know she didn't want to be that anymore. At least, not if she could help it. Sometimes people gave you no choice and she was just trying to survive.
At first she hadn't fully realized where she was going. She'd been on her own for the last year, with Laura as her only real company as she roamed the country, basically homeless. For a long time Kate hadn't even bothered thinking about anything that had any connection to Laura's past. She had her own demons to fight, and Kate wasn't too keen on actually trying to find anyone that might have a connection to Laura, but was still a complete stranger to her. Trust didn't come very easily. She didn't even know who she would really be looking for, other than the obvious, but for a long time Kate avoided it completely. Once she'd bought a train ticket in Pennsylvania with the money the truck driver had given her out of sympathy, though, she'd started to figure it out. Almost like she hadn't been wandering aimlessly at all; Laura had actually been leading her.
New York wasn't like anything she'd ever imagined it to be. It was a lot more. By then Kate had been to plenty of big cities, but Manhattan was definitely the most crowded, busiest place she'd ever been in. Her senses were almost immediately overwhelmed by the sheer volume of all of the different sights, smells, and sounds, actually on the verge of being overstimulated before she managed to get a handle on herself. Unlike other places she'd been to, Kate probably looked like she fit right in here, despite her perpetually disheveled appearance and ratty clothing. Her jeans had holes in them, the shirt she had on two sizes too big for her and the leather jacket she was wearing was practically falling apart, but she didn't look any different from the street kids she saw as she made her way through the city, only mildly aware of where they were heading until they finally got there.
M-Town.
A place she'd never seen except in fragments of Laura's memories, but the minute they crossed into the border of it, the familiarity of it was overwhelming. It was almost like nothing had ever changed, it looked exactly the same as it had before it'd eventually been destroyed. Neither of them knew how that was possible, but Kate didn't know enough about being a reincarnate and what that meant in this world to start seriously questioning it. She was just relieved to be some place that was somehow familiar to her, so she walked confidently through the streets of M-Town, still keeping a sharp eye on her surroundings the darker it got. It was already past sundown, and she knew she needed to find a place to sleep. She didn't have enough money for a motel room, but Kate was already used to sleeping in pretty rough conditions. Even a park bench would do, since she never slept for long anyway and her heightened senses would always wake her up to any danger even if she managed to fall asleep.
She should have turned back the way she came once she'd veered into an alley and heard them coming, but for a girl with her talents, there wasn't much for her to be afraid of. They were mutants, she could tell from the odd physical features some of them were sporting. All four of them stopped, and she stopped, turning her head slightly to look back at the mouth of the alley, still unobstructed. She wasn't cornered, but she could already feel her hackles raising, muscles tensing as they prepared for the inevitable threat. One of the mutants looked her over and grinned, clearly not seeing her for the threat that she really was, and pulled out a knife. Kate had to fight not to roll her eyes. "Hey, girlie. Got any cash?"
Kate just stood her ground, glaring at all of them equally. She'd give them one chance to walk away from this. "You really don't want to do that."
