Who: Rowan Stark, Wyatt Turner & Phoenix Schwartz
What: Rowan has a really stupid idea for getting Phoenix out of this situation
Where: Rikers Island, New York
When: Friday during visiting hours, October 27th, 2017
Warnings: TBD?
Rowan couldn't for the life of him understand why, but Phoenix had been refusing to see him for weeks now. Every time he requested a visitation, he was told that the prisoner had refused. He didn't understand it. He knew that Phoenix must be going through a lot right now, which was maybe the understatement of the year, but Rowan was still having trouble wrapping his head around all of this. Sometimes it felt like he must just be dreaming the whole thing, like a nightmare that never ended. There wasn't a doubt in his mind that Phoenix hadn't done this, and yet suddenly there were so many people around them that were ready to believe it. Superiors, other cops, the news reporters. Suddenly everyone was so ready to believe the worst of him, and Rowan didn't understand it. Phoenix didn't exactly have a shining record as a police officer, but murder? He just wasn't capable, no matter how much of a dangerous edge he and Sirius both seemed to share. Rowan believed that with every fiber of his being.
But despite knowing without a doubt in his bones that Phoenix hadn't done this, that still left Rowan with the question of who did. This whole thing already smelled like a frame job to him, but he had no proof. Just a gut feeling, and that wasn't enough to go on. Sometimes it helped point you in the right direction, instincts were just as import in police work, but when you didn't even know where to start... it didn't help that Rowan could barely think straight. Between his worrying about Phoenix and having to deal with the ongoing meltdown in his head as Remus began to slowly unravel under the pressure from the experience of essentially having to relive Sirius going away to prison for murder, Rowan was starting to feel at his wits end. He had to hold himself together though and figure this out, for Phoenix.
He just didn't know how.
All of the training and experience on the job in the world didn't prepare you for something like this. Having your best friend and partner accused of a gruesome murder like this wasn't something you were ever prepared for. Rowan knew Phoenix hadn't done it, but he'd seen the crime scene a few hours later and the photos taken directly after. It made him physically nauseous. He wanted to prove his friend was innocent, but he also wanted to find out who had done this. Who would be sick enough to want to do that to someone, and go to such great lengths to frame someone else for it? As New York cops, they had plenty of enemies, but Rowan still felt at a loss. The answer seemed so obvious, and yet Rowan couldn't manage to put a finger on it. If he could just see Phoenix, maybe he could finally think a little more clearly.
Wyatt didn't have anymore answers than Rowan did, even he didn't know why Phoenix was so adamantly refusing to see him. If Rowan knew, he could fix it. He knew he could. But Phoenix wouldn't even let him try. Everything felt like it was falling apart and one of his best friends was refusing to see or speak to him. This was the first time that Phoenix had pushed him away like this, and Rowan had to admit, it stung a little. But this wasn't about him. Rowan just had to keep reminding himself. This was about Phoenix, and what he and Wyatt could do to get him out of there. Rowan had a plan... a pretty insane plan that he hadn't even shared with Wyatt yet, but he'd asked Wyatt to request to see Phoenix using his name instead of Rowan's, on the off chance that Phoenix would agree if he thought Rowan wasn't with him. He felt a little guilty about the deception, but desperate times sometimes called for drastic measures.
They were led to a private visiting area after signing in, and Rowan did his best to ignore the looks he and Wyatt both got from inmates they passed with a sinking feeling as they disappeared into the room and sat down at the only table there, waiting for Phoenix to be brought in. Even out of uniform they still got recognized as cops in here, which made Rowan even more sick with worry about how Phoenix was fairing. Cops didn't traditionally last long behind bars, but Rowan tried really hard not to think about that as he leaned sideways to speak to Wyatt under his breath. "Thank you for doing this."
