Out of all of the ways that Garrett had expected his life to change, if Freddie knew how he felt about him, this hadn't been one of them. He'd planned for Freddie pulling away gently, or Freddie trying too hard to pretend that everything was normal and they could still be friends like they always had been before. He'd even planned for Freddie hating him for wanting him secretly for as long as he had, when he knew how Freddie felt about honesty, and people who were supposed to be his friends keeping secrets from him. Every way that things could possibly go wrong, Garrett had planned for that. He'd expected it, not because he didn't think that he was attractive, or some kind of catch, but because he couldn't imagine any world where Freddie would be interested in him as more than friends, because he'd thought that Freddie was completely uninterested in other men, no matter what kind of gossip people liked to whisper about the Morgan family.
He hadn't planned for Freddie to kiss him back, or for him to spend time together... not the way they had been spending time together, as friends who would hang out, or engage in activities together, but the way that two people who might have been interested in each other, and who wanted to see where whatever was between them might go, would do. Not that it was all that different from the kind of hanging out that they had been doing. It was a lot of the same things, actually, just with the truth told. That wasn't something that Garrett had planned for at all. He really hadn't planned on being happy, but there he was, smiling while he mucked out the stalls because he knew that, before long, Freddie would be coming to join him, they would spend time together, just the two of them, and then they might share a few kisses at the end of the night.
It had never gone further than that, a kiss or two, but Garrett didn't mind that, either. It wasn't like he had any idea what would come next, after the kissing... and yes, he knew that there were plenty of people that he could have found out from, but the only one of them that Garrett, and Lancelet, felt comfortable with, that was Daniel, and Garrett wasn't going to ask Freddie's brother what the next step was, what came after kissing when it was two men involved. They weren't even telling anybody, yet, not until they'd figured it out for themselves. Not that there was anything for Garrett to figure out, really. He loved Freddie. That was it. That was all there was to it. It had become a part of who Garrett was, since he'd realized it. He was Garrett Landry. He would die for his sister, he was happiest when he was on a horse's back, and he loved Alfred Morgan like he had never loved anyone before in his life.
That meant that he was okay with waiting, okay with letting Freddie take as long as he needed to, to figure out how he felt about Garrett. He was okay, honestly, with whatever he could have, as long as Freddie was a part of it, even if Freddie decided that, even if he enjoyed kissing Garrett, he wasn't interested in any more than that. It was more than Lancelet had ever gotten. It was a chance, and it might end with Garrett hurting more, someday, than he would have if he and Freddie had never tried at all, but at least for a while Garrett could have him, or at least parts of him.
Garrett was humming, while he worked, a strange mishmash of a song that Lancelet knew and a sappy pop tune that he kept hearing on the radio, switching between the two different melodies absently while he tossed soiled hay with a rake. It was a familiar routine, but not normally one that he hummed his way through. Not until Freddie had kissed him back. Honestly, he wouldn't be surprised if someone had figured out that something was different, by then. Hopefully, they wouldn't connect whatever was making Garrett happy with Freddie. Not until they'd decided that they were ready to tell everyone else about it. Of course... Krista probably already knew. Maybe Ellie. It wasn't like either he or Freddie were that good at hiding things from their sisters. If they knew, though, they'd both kept quiet about it. Maybe, Garrett thought, they just liked seeing them happy.
