WHO: Lana Ross and Iris James
WHAT: Combat Training
WHERE: Camelot training rooms
WHEN: Thursday afternoon
WARNINGS: Training violence? Bad language?
Lana was not great when it came to hand-to-hand combat. An argument could be made that she sucked at it, and that argument could be backed up empirical evidence, as well as documentation of the bruises on her body that resulted every time she did training in it. Give her a bow, put her in long-range combat situations, and she excelled. It wasn't any surprise, given her reincarnate, but Katniss did her no favors once ranged weapons were taken out of the picture. Sure, the Girl on Fire, the Mockingjay, survived them. She was scrappy if she had to be, but mostly she was lucky and got help. Her fight with Clove only ended in her victory because Thresh had come along and killed her before she could finish Katniss off.
Part of the problem was that she was small and skinny, but she knew she couldn't completely blame it on that. Plenty of people were small and still managed to be great fighters. And it definitely wasn't for a lack of trying or training; even if Lana had wanted to try and weasel her way out of the hand-to-hand stuff, Jess would never allow it. The reincarnate of Johanna Mason didn't take it easy on anybody, and she definitely wasn't taking it easy on the reincarnate of Katniss Everdeen. Katniss and Johanna ended up with an understanding of each other that actually blossomed into a great friendship, but part of that friendship was built on neither one letting the other get away with the easy way out. Besides, Lana was stubborn, especially with this. She would be damned if she was going to give up on being better at it--even if she'd already been in Camelot a couple of years. At least there was a little progress.
It was part of the reason why she was currently standing across from Iris James on the blue mat, the plastic material cool beneath her bare feet. She could have sparred with Christian if she really wanted an easy go of it that day; Christian was a great fighter, and he and Finnick were entertaining, but he had a bad tendency of taking it easy on her. That was the opposite of what she wanted right then; the political atmosphere in the world was a tumultuous one that rarely sided with reincarnates, so she needed to get better at this. After all, it wasn't like the arena hadn't already been used against them. She needed to be prepared, and not just for her own sake. If she truly wanted to protect Lily, she had to cover all of her bases.
"Okay," She nodded, swallowed, and tried to catch her breath. Despite being in comfortable clothes that she could move in, she felt anything but comfortable. Her muscles were burning, and she was trying to catch her breath from the heavy workout. She held a finger up, her other hand on her thigh as she bent over. "One, I hope you're constantly complimented for being a total badass, and two," She took a deep breath. "I hate you a little for looking like a warrior while I look like...this." She gestured to her own visage, and grinned. "But you're a way better partner than Christian. For the record."
