Where: The Woods

Cady was a good girl. She did her chores without complaint, she listened to her parents and obeyed them without question, she went to church every Sunday and prayed whenever she needed guidance. Good girls could marry good boys who would protect them and look after them just as their parents had in repayment for them seeing to homemaking tasks. That was what she had always been taught anyway. Except that all the ‘good' boys had married the girls who it would be questionable to call good. Most had borne children shortly after. Her mother had become sick, then her father. Her mother had succumbed to her illness, and her father showed little sign of improving. Suddenly she was the adult responsible for taking care of their daily needs and making sure there was enough food on the table to get by.
Then there was granny. A crotchety old woman who was only possibly related by blood, Cady was never quite sure and now it was too late to asker mother for confirmation. Anyway, her father had often been tasked with going out into The Woods to take care packages to her since she was nowhere near The village. Now that he couldn't do it, the duty fell to her. The situation wasn't ideal. The woodcutter from the village complained about vicious wolves that lived out there and she supposed there might be evil witches as well.
But a walk through The Woods would be a break from her new monotony of working as a washerwoman, maid and seamstress. Since she had started trying to supplement their income with these jobs for other, thankless people, Cady had found herself craving some excitement. With increased responsibility she wanted a better understanding of the world.
Donning the red woollen cloak her mother had lovingly made for the fall before she passed away, Cady checked her basket had everything. Satisfied, she pulled the cloak tight around her against the cold and hefted the vessel into her arms. Slowly she began her journey, starting with the main path which she knew faded out at some point. She thought she knew where to go after that, but she'd soon find out whether she did or not.
