Everyone knew the story of King Daniel and his husband, Zane. Some years ago, an evil witch put a spell on Daniel as a prince, a sleeping curse that said he would never wake again except by true love’s kiss. Well true love’s kiss found him, and Daniel became king soon after. Freddie (Alfred, but he preferred Freddie. It was much less stuffy than ‘Alfred’ or ‘Prince Alfred’. Both tended to make him squirm uncomfortably.) had heard the story a thousand times, from both sides, and at this point he pretend to be sick of it but secretly, Freddie always loved hearing them re-tell it. He was a bit of a hopeless romantic in that way, and hearing the story about how his older brother fell in love never got old. It also made him very eager to find his own love story.
You could hardly blame Freddie for being so attached to the notion of true love, when he and his twin sister might as well have been the products of it. His father and new husband were very much in love and couldn’t have a child of their own the natural way, the mother of the king’s previous children having died a few years prior. One day on one of their long walks together they met a strange, old woman in the woods, who in exchange for something from them, promised to give them a child of their very own. What she wanted from them was bizarre; a cow as white as milk, a cape as red as blood, hair as yellow as corn and a slipper as pure as gold. It was then that they realized the old woman was a witch, but with his only heir still under a sleeping curse, the king was desperate enough that they agreed immediately. Somehow, they managed to get everything the witch asked for, and nine months later Freddie and Ellie were born, seemingly out of thin air. It was magic.
Perhaps that’s why, despite Daniel’s own history with witches, Freddie couldn’t look solely unfavorably on them. He understood that some people with that kind of power would only ever use it for evil, but how could he think that they all did, when someone had used it to give his parents such great joy? For a price, maybe, but what thing didn’t have a price on it these days. Daniel awoke from his spell when the twins were still only just coming of age, their father took off his crown to put it on Daniel’s head and for a time, everyone was immensely happy together. It had still only been a year from today since the giant had attacked their city and both of his parents had been killed in the fray, but Freddie remained optimistic throughout. Life would never come trouble free, but there was a lot of happiness to be found, if you would only wait for it.
Freddie loved when he got to ride. It was still his favorite thing to do, when he had no princely duties to attend to. As Daniel and Zane didn’t yet have any children of their own, Freddie was technically the next in line if, god forbid, anything happened to his older brother, so he had his responsibilities, especially with the royal ball coming up. Right now his only responsibility was the hunt, however, and along with a few other of his most trusted friends and knights, Freddie had been enjoying a vigorous hunt through the forest in pursuit of a large buck. He had been closing in on the animal when it managed to get away from him, but Freddie was in hot pursuit, pushing his steed to go faster with those powerful legs in the hopes of catching it before the sun set and it got too dark to keep riding. Daniel tended to worry if Freddie was out too long past sundown.
