Who: Thomas Taylor, Kylie Kensington & later Alexis Taylor
What: A failed attempt at a marriage proposal
Where: Some restaurant in Manhattan, NY
When: Saturday night, August 27th 2016
Warnings: A lot of second hand embarrassment and some violence
Thomas had never been so nervous in his life. It wasn't that he actually thought there was a good chance Kylie would say no, but then again, there was always a chance with anything, wasn't there? A thought that didn't exactly boost his confidence any, but there you have it. If she said no, he'd just pack up and move to some remote place to live in the woods like a hermit for the rest of his life. That was a perfectly reasonable life choice for a man who'd just had his marriage proposal turned down, wasn't it? He was probably being a little overly dramatic about the whole thing, but it was hard for Thomas not to be a little nervous. He loved Kylie. He just wanted to be with her.
He'd never done this before. Obviously. Thomas really didn't have the first clue what made a memorable proposal, he wasn't an expert and Peter was no help, despite having done this himself before. Thomas didn't really know anyone else who could call themselves an expert, but Alyssa had been a big help in helping him choose the ring and generally talking him down from some of his more insecure, self-destructive moments regarding popping the question. He'd been saving up for... bloody hell knows how long now. A long time, to be vague about it. Barely enough for the down payment, but luckily, Thomas had managed it, and thanks to Alyssa he had an engagement ring in his pocket that he was positive Kylie would love. That is, if she said yes. If she didn't, he supposed it didn't really matter whether she liked the ring or not.
Maybe some people would say it was too soon, or they were still too young, but Thomas didn't think so. The more he thought about it, and he'd been thinking about it a lot lately, asking Kylie to marry him just made sense. More than made sense, it's what he wanted, more than anything else. They'd been together four years, had been through hell and back, sometimes literally. They'd been through more together in the last four years than most people went through in their entire lives, and he and Kylie were still standing. Whenever Thomas thought about it, he knew there was no one else for him. No one else he'd rather be with. He only hoped that Kylie still felt the same. He was pretty sure she did, but you could always count on the mind to start working against you and make you believe things that weren't true when it was least convenient.
The restaurant wasn't the most fancy place you could go to propose to someone, he supposed. It was certainly a nicer place than Thomas was used to, and definitely not a place he ever would have been in for any other reason. He'd picked this place because it was nicer than the places they usually went to, though now he was worried that maybe that had been a bad idea. He knew how rich her family was so Thomas had been insecure about his choice, wanting it to be nice because Kylie deserved nice things, but she already had nice things. This restaurant, the nicer clothes he was wearing to try and fit in, it wasn't really him. It wasn't Peter, either. Would she see right through him and guess? Thomas hoped not. Trying not to squirm in his chair where they'd been seated on an outside patio with a view, Thomas looked across the table and smiled, thinking for the millionth time how he didn't deserve her, but he was glad she'd chosen him anyway. "You look nice. ... You always look nice."
