Warnings: Sap overload?
Daniel hadn't always loved Christmas, especially as a kid, but later, he'd learned to appreciate it. He'd even become one of those saps that actually enjoyed the holidays, enjoyed the excuse to shower his loved ones with presents and spend extra time with family. For the Morgan-Evans family, Christmas had always been a pretty big deal, though Matthew Morgan had been the one to largely keep up with the family traditions each year. Now that he was gone, that task was left to Daniel, a task that he never really minded, though his idea of celebrating Christmas was always a little less... extravagant, then his father's. The most over the top thing was the tree, which, in Daniel's opinion, was meant to be a little over the top. Everything else was simple table settings, enough food for everyone present to eat, and just enough decorations without it being thought of as too gaudy. Guests in attendance were immediate family and plus ones, so the gathering itself was appropriately intimate for a Christmas celebration. Unfortunately, that also meant that the rising tension between the twins was a little more obvious than usual with so few people for buffering.
By now it was known by everyone in the family, and probably most everyone in Camelot, that Freddie and Ellie were barely on speaking terms with each other. Maybe not everyone knew the sordid details behind that, but Daniel did. Freddie had confided in him about it early on, and despite Daniel's urgings to both of his siblings several times, they still hadn't found a way to reconcile. He didn't doubt that they would eventually, no matter how hard they all fought with each other the Morgan-Evans family always found a way to forgive one another. No matter what, they were a family. Unfortunately some of them were a little more stubborn than others, so it took a lot longer to come to that point. The twins were among the most stubborn in the family, and proud of it, so Daniel didn't hold out much hope that they would make any amends tonight. Despite that, it certainly wasn't the worst Christmas the family had ever spent. Aside from Freddie and Ellie's obvious efforts to stay on opposite sides of the room from each other, the company was nice, and everyone else seemed to be in high enough spirits that it ended up mostly canceling out the rest.
Still, at some point after food and presents (yes, they were one of those families that opened presents on Christmas Eve), the underlying tension became so thick that it was nearly unbearable, and no amount of drinking would be able to soothe it. At least, not the kind of drinking that Daniel wanted to do. Blacking out on Christmas wasn't exactly on his to-do list that night, especially not when Zane was here with him. Zane, at least, always made things better, no matter where he was or what he was doing. He was glad Zane was here tonight, though Daniel was starting to think that he'd rather be spending tonight with Zane somewhere that wasn't the room where the rest of his family and all the awkward tension was. Having just left Lydia and a conversation they'd been having about security upgrades (unsurprisingly, Daniel and Lydia were the two in the family who couldn't ever quite leave the work at work. Though they would both likely argue that it was difficult to do so when home and work existed in the same castle), Daniel found Zane on the other side of the room and slid in behind him to whisper in his ear. "Want to get out of here?"
