Last year Holly hadn't done much for her birthday. Actually, she hadn't done much for her birthday in the last five years. Not since Tawny died. When you're a twin, usually birthdays are the most hated of all the days, other than Christmas, but birthdays especially. No matter what, you were always sharing your birthday with someone else, and there was always someone in the family or a friend who thought it would be hilarious to just get one gift for both twins, like they were the same person. Holly and Tawny were definitely not the same person, they were as different as night and day, and when Tawny was alive, they'd hated their birthday. Now that she was gone, Holly weirdly missed hating her birthday. She didn't hate it now, she just didn't like to celebrate it, because no matter how much she'd resented it before, it just felt too weird not sharing it anymore.
But she was done moping. On her last birthday she had turned twenty-five, and instead of partying with her and Kate's friends she had spent most of the night with Topher and Xander. It had been nice. There was cake, and some awkward family bonding. Xander had never known Tawny, but it wasn't weird to have him there, and they'd grown a lot closer since then. The whole surprise half-brother thing didn't matter to Holly, never really had, it just fit in with the rest of her crazy family tree, and Xander was definitely the sanest of the bunch. She'd had a good time with them, but this year? Holly was over being sad. About a lot of things, but especially about her birthday, so she was making a sincere effort this year to start turning some things around. That meant an actual party.
Despite Lina and Colby's embarrassing attempts to set her up, Holly was going stag to her own birthday party, and she was happy about it. It meant that she could dance with whoever she wanted to, and on her birthday, she should be able to freaking dance with whoever she wanted to. The club was in New York, one of Holly's favorite haunts from her more hardcore partying days. It had been awhile, but they still remembered her and didn't card any members of their group who weren't quite twenty-one yet (and her group was large, Holly had sent out an open invitation on the boards to come party with her and her friends 'YA style' earlier that day), so everyone was able to get in and start having a good time. A few hours in, Holly was making pretty good on that. She'd been getting free drinks all night, and danced with a couple of the guys who had given them to her, but only because she'd wanted to. You didn't owe a guy a dance just because he sprang for a seven dollar drink, screw that. The place was crowded, the music was loud and awesome, and she was with the Young Avengers as well as some of her other nearest and dearest. What could possibly make this night any better?
