Where: Topeka, Kansas
Warnings: Enough UST to make your head explode
David had never actually done a real stake out before, so at first, it was kind of exciting. In a way that made Dean completely embarrassed to be associated with someone so green to the job, but David mostly ignored his internal old man grumblings. At one point the Winchester had been just as young and new at this as he was, though David was technically still a few years younger than Dean had been when he started hunting alone with Sam. At the budding young age of twenty-three, David already qualified as some kind of celebrity status thanks to REDO, but the idea of a good, old fashioned stake out was more exciting to him in the moment than a night on the stage. He’d been on stage a million times by now, a million and one after tomorrow night’s show, and he still felt the same sort of adrenaline rush every time. This was a different sort of rush he’d never experienced before, so at first, he was completely preoccupied by it.
A rush that very soon left once he realized just how boring stake outs actually were. They’d been sitting in the Impala for over two hours now and while the first hour had been more of a tense game of never knowing when something might happen, now David was fairly certain nothing was going to happen and they were both going to shrivel up and die in this car. They were parked down the street from an abandoned house that they had previously identified as a vampire nest, and they were staking it out to try and gauge just how many were potentially in this nest, how many vamps came and went at any given time of night, any reliable patterns they could establish before they tried to go in there guns blazing. Or more accurately, before David and Hannah tried to go in there and not end up dead. The first and only time they’d taken on a pack of vampires, they’d had the unbelievable luck of running into Bren, and David wasn’t so macho that he couldn’t admit they wouldn’t have been able to do it without him. He and his sister would have been vamp food. Now they had Finley, which was also a pretty sure bet for staying alive (an ironic assumption if there ever was one), but Finley was here to help them be better hunters. They couldn’t do that without some actual practice, and taking on a group of demons was infinitely more dangerous than a group of vampires while they were still inexperienced.
Though at this point, David might actually welcome the danger. Anything had to be more interesting than sitting in a car for two hours staring at a house that might as well actually be abandoned. They’d seen maybe one or two come and ago in the last hour, but nothing more exciting than that, and David felt like he was starting to go stir crazy. That might also partially be because he was trapped in a car with Finley, and he was trying really hard not to dwell on that fact. For several reasons, some of which were probably obvious, and some others that were a little less obvious even to himself. The point still stood that he was trapped in a car with Finley, and he’d never actually felt claustrophobic before, but he was starting to feel like it. So of course, he overcompensated by being as difficult as possible. Letting out a groan and shrinking further down into the front seat, David looked over at Finley accusingly. “You know, if you’d wanted to kill me slowly, this is a really dick way to do it. You could at least let me turn on the radio.”
