Lucien had been enjoying all the ciphers Matthias had been sending him in his free time to solve, so he'd barely had to think twice before accepting this new challenge, as strange as it was. Perhaps it was because he was already used to older men acting as some sort of... mentor to him. Between the Occlumency lessons Atticus was giving him and the puzzles Matthias sent him periodically to solve, Lucien's mind was always fairly occupied, and he liked it that way. One of the things he hated most about summer was how idle it always felt, but this summer? Well, it was proving to be a pretty unique one. Matthias and his friend Jim were, in a word, also fairly unique. Lucien did have some lingering questions about them, mysterious as they still were. Specifically why they seemed so interested in him, but it hardly seemed perverted. The two men were obviously more into each other than anyone else, so perhaps they really were just two older gay men with an interest in poetry and ciphers, looking for companionship with others who shared their tastes. Lucien still didn't know them very well, but at least for now, he was willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. He enjoyed their company.
So far, his little wild goose chase by MTN had proven to be interesting. When Matthias had first started sending him them, Lucien had never solved a cipher before. He liked puzzles, though, especially Sudoku, so he took a liking to them almost immediately. By now, he was pretty pleased with himself how well and how fast he could solve one. The first note slipped under his door? The question felt like a freebie, as Matthias by now probably knew Lucien's own penchant for the beat poets, but he didn't mind. Jack Kerouac loved margaritas, said to have developed a taste for them during one of his many trips through Mexico. "Don't drink to get drunk. Drink to enjoy life," Kerouac had often said. Well, Lucien certainly agreed with that. With the clue to the first pass phrase solved, Lucien easily decoded the cipher and found himself on an unexpected journey.
His first stop was Happy Endings, which Lucien was already well familiar with thanks to Matthias and Jim. It was Jim's club, and while Lucien didn't see the man there when he walked in, he was sure he was lurking around somewhere. He did as the letter instructed and went directly up to the bar, approaching the bar tender on duty who was exceptionally attractive in a hot, psychotic jack ass sort of way. Not Lucien's usual type, but he could still appreciate. When the bartender asked him what he wanted, Lucien did as instructed and told him that he would like to honor Robert Burns but he's always been more a fan of Capote. The bartender brought Lucien a screwdriver, entirely appropriate, along with a napkin that had his next cipher written on it. So far Lucien was only a little wary, and mostly impressed with the level of ingenuity Matthias had taken to organizing this.
Since the first clue had been the name of a drink, Lucien could only assume it was the same for this one, and he was right. He'd never actually had a screwdriver before, believe it or not, vodka wasn't his normal drink, but he found he liked it and left a tip behind. His next stop was far from Chicago, an MTN's worth trip to Los Angeles, where he found himself inside the infamous Skin, a strip club for reincarnates. Matthias's second note had told him to catch the attention of the woman with the snake, so he did. Unlike some, Lucien wasn't deterred by a snake. Maybe a little predictably, he rather liked them. The woman he spoke to was intimidating, but in an enthralling sort of way. Lucien might be very inside the closet but he wasn't oblivious to his obvious preference for men, and yet he still found himself vaguely entranced by her while she danced. It wasn't sexual, but it was something.
After slipping her a bill to show his appreciation for her performance, he told her that like Hemingway, he wanted to live his life to the fullest. Hilariously ironic, but in the midst of this curious adventure that now practically had him on the edge of his seat, Lucien could maybe find the sentiment in it now. His third note came with a mimosa, and Lucien spent some time sipping on it while he attempted to fully understand the purpose of tonight. He knew that particular answer wouldn't be in the cipher, he'd already solved it, and by this point Lucien was only more invested. His latest findings sent him doubling back to Chicago, which he didn't mind since the MTN was available, but he wound up outside of a club he'd never been to. He'd never even heard of Here&Gone, which immediately made him wary, but that didn't stop him from going inside.
As soon as Lucien made it through the front doors, he felt his pulse quicken, the adrenaline that came with being so close to the end of this challenge causing his guards to drop a little. From what his eyes could tell, it was a normal enough club, though what Matthias had said about it caused him to doubt that in its entirety. Any club that leaned heavily towards reincarnates was bound to have some differences, and most of the people in here seemed to be openly exhibiting some range of powers, which only peaked his curiosity. It was too warm in here for the dark gray blazer he was wearing, but Lucien kept it on, simply opening it up a little to air out the black t-shirt under it as he made his way towards the bar. He had no way of knowing who he was looking for this time, as Matthias hadn't specified a bartender or a dancer to approach, just a man who embodied the name of this place. The owner, he assumed, and Lucien figured the bar was a good place to start since all his other clues had come with drinks. He took a seat near the end, sharp blue eyes casually surveying the room and only half listening to the music vibrating through the walls as he considered his next move before leaning back towards whoever was behind the bar. "I've never been here before. What is this place exactly?"
