WHO: The Strange Family (Holly Strange, Topher Strange, and Xander Christopoulos)
WHAT: Angsty prison visits
WHERE: Rikers Island
WHEN: Friday Evening Visiting Hours
WARNINGS: Angst. Mention of violence. It's not a happy one guys.
Xander was having a rough go of it. For a while after his arrest, he was kept in FBI holding under the watch of Agent Shepherd while he was questioned and requestioned about Rob Strange's death. Eventually he learned to anticipate which questions were coming just from the sheer repetition of what was spoken. He knew they were just trying to trip him up, get him to say something different so they could say he was lying. Whether or not he was innocent until proven guilty, they were trying to build a case against him--and Xander was smart enough to know it wasn't looking good. It was a bad case against a normal person; he had probable cause considering Rob was found to be his biological father, they never got along, and there were altercations caught on camera with the two of them fighting. He'd never been private about his hatred towards his sperm donor. And god, if they dug enough, would they discover how he'd accidentally been associated with the Resistance when he was seventeen? The bias against reincarnates was the least of his worries.
Eventually a judge ruled that his case didn't belong to the FBI, and had him transferred to Rikers Island to await trial with local authorities. The FBI were remaining involved to an extant, so he was told, but he would be held in the jail amongst the regular population of criminals until he was tried--and, if guilty, sentenced. Xander couldn't help dwelling on the 'if' that felt so very much like a 'when.' He knew beyond a doubt that he hadn't--that he couldn't--kill Rob, but that meant nothing if he couldn't get a good case to prove it. Somehow 'no, seriously, he was an immortal god' didn't seem like a defense that would do anything but send him to a padded cell instead of prison.
Jail was brutal. He wasn't a cruel person, and being thrown amongst the cruelest and most desperate made him fresh meat to be pounced upon. He'd gone up against monsters and gods alike, and Riptide still refused to leave his side, so if he had tried he could have fended off attacks with ease and beaten everyone to a pulp. Unfortunately, there was a fine line behind self-defense and what guards would perceive as instigating violence (which would look awesome on the case against him), so most of the time he had to try and avoid conflict, or just take the beating when it came. The worst was when the guards themselves took a few swings; apparently, some of them had been personally affected by some not-so-nice reincarnates and had a skewed view on all of them. Being a demigod meant that the bruises were usually gone by the next day, but that didn't mean he wanted to be there any longer.
They led him out to the visiting area without telling him who was there to see him, but the relief when he came around the corner and saw Holly and Topher was plain as day. He'd been expecting a lawyer--he'd seen him more often than anybody else--but this? This was better. The shiner on his eye from a fight that morning was like a spotlight on his face, but he forgot it existed as he rushed forward to hug them both at the same time. At least until he was told by the guard 'no touching.'
"I can't believe--" He swallowed. The relief was threatening to open up a floodgate of emotions. "Thanks for coming to see me."
