Gotham.
The city that never sleeps. Or was that New York? Eh, it was right next door. There was arguably a criminal element in this city that was more persistent and harder to get rid of, they just came back in greater numbers like rats from the sewer. He wasn't one of those rats. He was the cat that hunted them.
Five years ago, Colin had accepted the Court's invitation to join. Things in the community had been rapidly deteriorating for awhile, and at some point, he and Dick had just given up. They wanted to go back to something familiar, but things in Gotham had seemed to change overnight, and so did they. They weren't interested in playing with others, being part of a team didn't hold the appeal that it used to, but there was still one other option. The Court of Owls.
An ancient underground conspiracy that has controlled Gotham City for centuries, using architecture and murder to wield Gotham political influence throughout history. Their legend is told only through whispers and a nursery rhyme that bears their name, and to carry out their interests, they employ a breed of highly-trained assassins known as Talons. Dick at one point had been meant for this life, before he'd turned his back on the circus to become Bruce Wayne's ward. Colin hadn't had that kind of luxury, and at some point, he'd run out of reasons to say no. He was a Talon now, and his given name was forever forfeit.
Tonight was a job like any other job. He was on his way to take care of a candidate for office who had become an undesirable for the Court. Moving through the shadows like he was a part of them, he saw the world differently behind the owl-like mask all Talons wore. He saw the need for shepherding, to keep the real villains of Gotham in check. The Court of Owls weren't the real villains, they were the shepherds, and it was his job to weed out the sheep from the wolves. He was nearing his target now, maybe a block away, when he began to feel like he was being followed.
