Despite having her apartment for a little less than five months, Tori hadn't spent much time in it. She had movers set up furniture; she added a few of her own belongings and familiarized herself with the best coffee shops before leaving. She went home and spent time with her family, not enough time, before she was off to the Hamptons with friends for a month. Tori came back to New Haven with enough time to secure herself with a job, discover that she hadn't missed a thing—not the rumor of a single good party—and stack up her books on her new desk.
The last few weeks of summer flew by fast: she met plenty other students while crawling through New Haven. She found all the right bars, all the right cafes and the best place to get a late night dinner. But the best part was when Tori sent in her cheer-tryout and got a call-back. It was a thin line between being on the team and …not being on the team. She hadn't told a soul and wasn't planning on it. She wanted it in words before she went blabbing her mouth; superstition was a thing, thanks to Ambrose. Then she got the e-mail, multiple e-mails: one of the team, one for classes, one for that club she said she might job. It was a rush of constant motion and classes didn't start for another three days.
There was a slight relief, if not a little suspicion, when her mother called and said she was taking her out for dinner. Tori didn't even know that her mother was in New Haven. But then again, she hadn't been keeping the best of contact lately. A bad habit she always got into the first few weeks before school year started and didn't end until a good three weeks into classes.
Tori twisted a curl around her fingers and let it fall as she breezed through the doors, wiggling her fingers toward the host. "I'm meeting my mother," she said as she passed, eyes searching. She smiled as she caught sight of her sitting at a table. There was a faint hesitation, a pause as she smoothed her hands over the bottom of her dress and flicked her bangs to the side, but then Tori was at her side. "Hey, mom." And she couldn't help but beam because hey, it was her mom and she hadn't seen her in a while.
