WHO: The Young Avengers and any Avengers who want in!
WHAT: Loki releases the Destroyer on the town, the Young Avengers overhear the call for help and decide to get there first.
WHERE: Las Cruces, New Mexico
WHEN: Tuesday evening.
WARNINGS: Violence. Probably language.

Eavesdropping probably wasn't Colby's finest moment. It had been a problem of hers since she was young, a personality trait she was continuously chastised for. It didn't deter her ever; part of her was certain, even, that having Cassie exacerbated it. There was a certain element of nosiness you had to possess as a superhero. How else were you going to know where the danger was?

Which was sort've what happened in this instance. She'd gone to visit her brother at work close to quitting time (for everybody else, not him, since Q was notorious for working far longer than he should), and happened to be in the department when Wesley Roberts got an Avengers call over his comm device. Apparently, as the male voice very seriously proclaimed, the Destroyer--some type of robot thing, if her comic knowledge was anything to go by--was making its name proud on Las Cruces. He needed back-up from the Avengers to protect the city and save the day.

Sounded like a perfect opportunity for the Young Avengers to showcase their talents. Colby had slipped out before Wes could without a proper goodbye to her brother, and immediately called Holly and Henry. With a unanimous vote and a little bit of Henry's magic, the three were easily transported to where they needed to be before the Avengers could get there. Which was, at the time, exactly what they wanted.

Now, however, looking up at the giant robot alien thing spewing fire at buildings, Colby wasn't so sure that this was the right idea. They had a teen magician, a girl who could grow or shrink, and an archer--against a Loki-controlled robot. Even wearing Cassie's costume, there was a small chance they had bitten off more than they could chew--but she wasn't about to admit that out loud. They had something to prove, as the Young Avengers always did.

"That is a really big robot."

This was Holly's first time in the field, including that one time where they'd all recently been blasted into the future where instead of out there fighting the good fight she'd spent five years in a gross prison cell. She didn't have the combat experience, that was all Kate, but like Kate she was itching for a good fight, so when Colby alerted them to the crisis? It was Young Avengers Assemble.

Actually, Young Avengers Teleport, and not being used to Billy and Henry's magic yet Holly was still a little wobbly in the knees when they landed in Las Cruces. Of course the inability to keep balance could also have been attributed to the giant alien robot stomping through the town, which was enough of a frightening sight to even make the likes of Kate Bishop stop in her tracks for a second.

"Whoa -" Holly's eyes widened and she clutched her bow in her right hand tighter, also decked out in her reincarnate's token costume though with her own personal modifications. A hoodie sweatshirt. "I think we need a bigger team."

The Avengers weren't there yet, but they couldn't just hold off until everyone else got here. The Destroyer was wiping out houses and businesses by the block, people were fleeing the streets and Holly could already see some bodies that weren't getting back up again. It made Kate's blood boil, and Holly angrily snapped her bow into place. She was still pretty new to this, but thanks to Kate's photographic reflexes, she could get the hang of it pretty fast. "That is a really big, dead robot."

Okay, not her best, but she didn't have time to retract the awful pun. Because before she could let one arrow fly, her immediate view was blocked by a towering hunk of muscle and blonde as the figure of James Fox came down hard on the ground in front of them, shirt ripped and hammer in hand. Holly's jaw dropped as the reincarnated Asgardian looked at them hard, his voice practically booming when he spoke. "What the Hel are you kids doing here?"

"Arigato! He-ey!" Virginia's appearance on the scene wasn't as dramatic as James' but the casual air in which she approached the situation had an impact all the same. "Don't be too hard on the teeny tinies, Big Thunder." Clapping a hand on Billy's shoulder Virginia stepped out of her heels, a glorious silvery black pair that had expensive written all over them.

As terrifying as the ongoing devastation around them was Virginia was less than impressed. On her own she'd done much worse, much faster and while that wasn't a point of pride she was most certainly desensitized to mass scale destruction.

"The minis can take crowd control" while it didn't sound like she was deferring to James she was. These were his stomping grounds and whatever he said would go. "I can give ole shiny over there a new target while you make with the obliterating. Sound good?"

Yeah, his magic was definitely, definitely still a work in progress. But he'd gotten the three of them there in one piece, and they were in some kind of costume and this was so cool.

And then seeing the Destroyer in person was absolutely terrifying. "Yeah. Yeah, we need. We need a huge party, you never go into a boss battle with a long range, ninja, and a mage. You need a tank--"

And holy shit, there was now a tank in the form of a god. With a hammer. A huge, hot tank, with the whole, you know. God-like deal. But god, Henry just froze up. They hadn't practiced, not really, and sure it was the three of them who knew each other, but Henry knew Colby somewhat and Holly a little.

But he'd desperately wanted something to happen. A brief moment of terror Did I cause this to happen? before Billy helped out and told him to shut the hell up, they had business to do. And the one thing they weren't...

"Hey, we got here, ready to go, before you guys!" And then he tried not to cower, but to stand up, bravely. "So we can help, not just do crowd control. We can fight, too."

This was too much. Even after he'd worked out the details with Shane, talked out how to bring Asgard back, actually pulling the trigger on the plan for his brother? That was much harder. And then this happened. Thor had proven to be more than a match for it on almost every occasion, but this? This was James's first time. And it was in his own backyard. Destroying his town, terrorizing his people. James was livid.

He didn't know where Shane was, but he didn't worry, the woman could more than take care of herself. It was everyone else he was worried about, the members of his club, who weren't exactly equipped to dealing with an Asgardian super-powered machine. With Logan behind the Destroyer's wheels, wherever Logan was at the moment, all bets were off.

"I'm not here to babysit," James said mostly to Virginia, which prompted a protest from Holly ("Hey! Who are you calling babies?") before the wiccan kid caught his attention. They had guts, he'd give them that, the Young Avengers always did. But he wouldn't be responsible for a bunch of kids losing their lives because he'd been too cowardly to do something about Logan when he'd had the chance.

"Do what you want, just don't get yourselves killed," James said as the local post office erupted in bits of debris and flames. Good thing the Government was out of business right now. Choosing to ignore the way the reincarnates of Billy and Kate were still gawking at him, he nodded to Virginia with a firm grip to her shoulder. "A good plan. See you on the other side."

"Alright Young Avengers!" Holly yelled triumphantly as the reincarnate of Thor (God he's hot. Did I just blaspheme? ... Focus, Holly!) flew off, thrusting an arrow upwards in the air like a flag. "Get into formation!" Did she know what that meant? Not really. Maybe their counterparts knew, though.

Terrified? Yes. There was a gigantic robot practically breathing fire down on all of the people in this New Mexico town. An alien robot at that, and she was there as part of a team of three that had never fought together! It was probably at least on the list of top ten scary things she'd faced (number one being her mom angry when she couldn't fit into her formal gown for one of her mother's parties).

But more prominent than the fear was the indignation. Colby was a perfectionist. She prided herself on being the best at everything she did (which often put way too much pressure on herself, but that was a different story), and that wasn't going to stop at superheroics. Having a couple of people equate having her around to having to babysit and delegating her and her friends to child's play made her more than a little angry. Angry enough that she ignored--mostly--the fact that Thor dude was literally built like a god and only stared a little bit before she was moving into action.

"What's the formation?" She asked, speaking louder than was necessary as she tried to compensate for the fact that her form was already growing larger. Her goal was to become at least as big as the robot so that she could grab it from behind--hopefully without stepping on anything. That was a legitimate concern the larger she got--the street wasn't exactly made for a giant girl.

"I can hold it still much more effectively than this bloody--" She started and stopped herself. Probably best not to insult the Hulk. "I'm going to hold it, you guys best destroy it, yeah?" But she was already moving toward the angry--could robots be angry?--creature.

"NO!" The word came out in a boom, Virginia's transformation into the Hulk wasn't a pretty thing. It was fast, it was violent and where once stood a tall attractive brunette there was now a massive emerald monster.

She hit Colby from behind, in between the shoulder blades forcing the now giantess face first into the pavement. Whatever control Virginia had was fading fast so she had to make this quick. She'd apologize to Colby later but the truth was they couldn't let her into the fray. You had to be a special kind of invulnerable to work side-by-side with the Hulk and Thor and as big as Colby could get she couldn't match either one in the strength or indestructible department.

"Big girl" the words came out in a sibilant hiss "help little people." Stretching to her full ten foot height Hulk let out a wordless yell. She would not be challenged, not in this. The monster turned and jumped forward, the leap propelling Hulk straight into the Destroyer's chest.

"HEY!" Shane's voice cut through the din, she had only arrived seconds before but the scene before her was familiar and with wrecking balls one and two handling the Destroyer that meant damage control had become her number one priority.

"You kids want to help" It wasn't a question, it was a challenge and hopefully some motivation. "Lets put out these fires." Gods knew there was enough of them. "You can get into a dick sizing contest with the Hulk later" she shot a look at Colby "but for now how about you use your size to clear some of this goddamn debris. Emergency services are going to need a pathway. Think you can handle that?"

The Young Avengers had seen a lot, but this was still something entirely new, for both them and their hosts. Holly was definitely out of her comfort zone here, but she wasn't about to let that stop her. The Avengers wanted them to be the clean up crew? Fine. But she was doing it with arrows flying.

"Lady, we can save people and fight for them too. It's called multitasking," Holly replied, bringing her bow down in line with her jaw and letting an arrow fly. She aimed it for the Destroyer's head, a direct hit but not too close to where the Hulk and Thor were currently wailing on it, the arrow exploding on contact. Explosive arrows were her new favorites.

It wasn't a big enough explosion to do any permanent damage, but it had the desired affect. The Destroyer was off-balance, giving James and Virginia the upper hand in beating it down with giant fists and hammers before it could breathe any more fire at them. That's when Holly turned to her team with a nod to Shane. The blonde woman did have a point, Holly wasn't so proud that she couldn't admit to that.

"Right. Colby? You're the giantess. We'll need a clear path, but even more than that we're gonna need a blockade. The wonder tons up there are gonna need a back up, someone between it and the rest of us if The Destroyer gets past them. Stay behind them, stay giant, and deflect anything that comes your way. Henry? Can you start by magicking some of these people to a safer distance? There's civilians hiding in this stretch of buildings too close to ground zero."

He would be lying if he said the call hadn't woken him up. Without warning, the alarm made itself known and Eddie Parks tumbled off of his bed and onto the floor with a loud thud. After mumbling something about how he was coming (and holding his tongue about how that was apparently a recurring theme for the day), Eddie skipped the shower and went straight for the suit.

It didn't make much of a difference. Being in the tin can was enough of a workout in itself. Besides, this one sounded like it was an emergency. (His favorite kind).

Kicking off towards New Mexico didn't take much effort. JARVIS was ready to go before the alarm even caught his attention. He wasn't sure what to expect, but he was getting enough information from his faithful computer sidekick to keep him prepared. A Destroyer. In New Mexico. Something about this all felt familiar. So far, a few Avenger Juniors, the Asgardian Wonder Twins, and Jolly Green Ginny had hit the scene.

Not a bad crowd, all things considered.

As the red and gold suit touched down near the scene, his grin could be heard through his maskplate. "Sorry I'm late. Traffic was Hell." He glanced around, assessing the situation through quick calibrations and readings. "Room for one more?"

While Shane and the junior Avengers were taking care of things down below, James and Virginia were battling the Destroyer the only way they knew how. With brute force, and a certain amount of extreme violence. It was effective, and yet, they were still only just beating it to every punch. For every hit of his hammer followed a wallop from the Hulk, and they were met with only with more fire and a mass of enchanted armor unwilling to yield.

The explosion made by the girl's arrow supplied them with a diversion. As soon as the Destroyer was thrown off balance, James landed another hit with his hammer that sent the iron monster flying hundreds of feet across the desert. The sudden appearance of Eddie Parks made him turn his head only briefly to acknowledge the reincarnate of Iron Man, allowing his partner in strength to momentarily take the lead on his brother's puppet. James didn't say as much, but in Eddie's somewhat timely appearance he was secretly grateful for another heavy hitter.

"You're late." In other words, start putting that suit to good use.

James turned back to his target, making a mid-air dash for the Destroyer while things on the ground continued to unfold in chaos, now a little more manageable with the extra help. Thankfully he and Virginia had put a little more distance between the Destroyer and the fleeing civilians, but it wouldn't last long. Not if they didn't shut this thing down and fast. He'd have to deal with his brother once and for all later.

"We need a clean shot at its mouth to take control of it!" James shouted over the wind to his friends, enduring another blow from the Destroyer that sent him flying backwards and making brief, hard contact with the ground while spitting up blood. Why Odin had ever thought it was a good idea to create this thing was beyond him. "Son of a bitch."

Virginia, whether or not she would ever admit it, was having fun. Hulk became stronger with each blow it landed on the Destroyer and as enthusiastic as she was about hitting the damn thing the enchanted suit of armor wasn't slowing down. When they heard James' shout over the chaos Hulk wasted no time in launching itself at the Destroyer again, clinging to the front of the enemy huge emerald hands tried to pry the mouth of the thing wider and just before brute strength could succeed Hulk took an energy blast full in the face and went flying back into the street causing a mini earthquake upon impact.

Shane cursed silently as their two heavy hitters went down within moments of each other. Not good, not good at all. Even with this unsettling development she couldn't help but smile when she looked back at the young Avengers. They had come together and held the line like true warriors and while no one was out of danger yet they'd kept the property destruction and loss of life to a minimum.

"I'm going to line up the shot!" she looked to Eddie and Holly "I don't care who takes it."

Gritting her teeth and ignoring Sif's scolding voice in her head (they had no real weapon in their hands, why would they ever leave their homestead without their sword?) Shane ran towards the Destroyer. She didn't need to hit it, her only intent was to be a moving target and keep it's focus on her.

Colby was officially in a bad mood. She didn't appreciate being somebody's punching bag for no reason (seriously? Was the shoving necessary?!), and it wasn't like her falling did no damage. By that point she had made herself as tall as--if not taller than--the Destroyer itself, so slamming forward onto the pavement didn't just hurt her. The cars she landed on smashed and littered the ground with windshield glass and she was pretty sure her elbow stuck into the front of one of the buildings they were supposed to be protecting. In essence, in Virginia's attempt at keeping the Young Avengers from making things worse, she'd...made things worse.

She'd picked herself up with a scowl and rubbed glass from her uniform as everybody else got situated, nodding and going into action again only because Holly told herself. She didn't take orders from the Avengers, thankyouverymuch, but she did listen to her leader. In seconds she had herself situated between the fighting and the people fleeing, her eyes focused on the Destroyer's actions. Any time a large piece of debris went flying she made sure to catch it and set it down before it could hit anybody else.

Once a plan was in formation, however, Colby knew how to be useful. Sure, she was being the barrier between the people and the destruction being reaped, but she could give Holly a better shot at the head. While Shane had it distracted, Colby crouched down in front of her fearless leader.

"Okay, don't think this is weird or anything, but I'm going to pick you up." She didn't wait for a yes or no before she scooped Holly up with her temporarily-ginormous hand and lifted her up. "You'll have a better angle for a shot up here."

"Whoa -" Holly was still recovering her balance from the small earthquake the Hulk had just rocked across the desert at it's landing, stumbling forward and grabbing onto Colby's giant ankle for some awkward support. And here she thought her life couldn't get any weirder.

Turns out it could get a lot weirder.

She didn't have much time to ingest Colby's plan before her new friend was picking her up in her equally giant hand, Holly's balance immediately thrown off again as she bounced around the girl's palm. Kind of humiliating, but Holly had to laugh at herself. Who was she kidding? There was no saving any real dignity when you were head to toe in purple. No offense, Clint. (And secretly, Kate and Holly really wished he was here.)

"Alright, so. We're up... pretty high right now." Once Holly had gotten over her balance issues (aka she eventually gave up and flopped to her knees to hang onto one of Colby's fingers for dear life) she made the mistake of looking over the side and seeing how far off from the ground they were when Colby stood up. Holly had never considered herself a person who was afraid of heights, but this? This was freaking high.

Okay, get over it, Strange. You've got a job to do.

"Okay." Holly gulped, getting to her feet with shaking knees and glancing back down where Shane and Henry were still kicking ass with their feet firmly planted on the ground. She seriously envied them right now. The brunette shook her head and hooked another explosive arrow into her bow, glancing over in Eddie's general direction with a raise of her brow. Better two against one, right? The Destroyer had cornered Shane and James was making a beeline for it as it opened its mouth again, a ring of fire preparing to burn the Asgardians alive. Perfect timing if they didn't miss.

"Ready when you are, Metal Man." Holly counted to three, pulled back and released. "Geronimo!"

"Open wide. This might pinch." Iron Man spoke through the metal mouth. He was hovering away from the Destroyer, moving around in the air every so often to provide it with another distraction. If it wasn't one blur keeping him occupied, it was another.

JARVIS had been running tests, analyzing the Destroyer and its (unfortunate) lack of weaknesses. Eddie had yet to hear the computer apologize. Let alone apologize at a rate like this.

When his opportunity knocked, Eddie flew higher. The target was aimed and he was ready. "Boom." A quick-fired, miniature missile made its way after Holly's arrow. That was the thing about marksmanship and well-crafted tools: they didn't miss.

"Nice shootin', Katniss." Eddie said, not staying in one place long enough to watch their handiwork explode inside of the Destroyer's mouth. Whatever damage was done, however, remained to be seen.

"Next?"

Wes had gotten the call at the same time as the other Avengers. It wasn't like his comm was busted or anything after all! He'd even been chivalrous enough to pick up Thomas on the way so that their very own web-slinger had a faster lift from New York to New Mexico. It should have all gone exactly according to plan.

Except that it was Wesley Roberts and Thomas Taylor and neither of them had bothered to a)take down the location so that they wouldn't forget the name of the city they were heading to or b) swallowed their pride enough to ask over the comms and admit that they'd gotten themselves lost. They'd ended up in New Mexico like they were supposed to be...on the completely other side of the state. It wasn't until a lot of brain picking later that they finally remembered and Wes was able to plug it into his suit's GPS.

When they were finally in business, it almost seemed idiotically obvious where they were supposed to be. Flying onto the scene was like coming onto the apocalypse; smoke rose from the devastation, and there was a giant girl. Wes's feet touched down just as the monster crashed onto its back, a mess of smoking and unmoving metal. The battle was over.

Wes dropped Thomas to the ground unceremoniously. "We missed the fight?! Dammit..." He rapped his knuckles against his face mask, causing it to retreat inside the War Machine armor so that his face was visible.

"Man this sucks balls. You should've asked for directions."

"Hey - oof." Thomas didn't have time to save his landing before he landed ass first on the ground after being dropped by Wes, glaring up at his friend behind his mask before jumping to his feet. Being extremely late to the fight was embarrassing enough, but did the Avengers have to see Spider-Man in his most uncoordinated moment? He was quick to turn around and scoff at Wes's accusation.

"Oi, I should have asked for directions? Sod off, you were the driver, you should have asked for bloody directions!"

They'd just missed the final show down, so they'd unfortunately missed seeing Holly's explosive arrow and a Eddie's missile catch The Destroyer right in the mouth, effectively breaking Logan Fox's control over it just before it was about to make itself an Asgardian barbecue. The Destroyer was now a mess of armored heap in the sand and everyone was worn and out of breath around them, the immediate town area in shambles.

"... Heh. Erm. We made it? Sorry, guys." Thomas brushed off his knees and stood up to his full height with a sheepish scratch to the back of his head, not knowing what else to do but continue to stand there uselessly with smoke and ash still rising around them. A tired James had already gotten to his feet as well and the dark shape of Samantha Ellis was also emerging from the shadows, having been aiding civilians in a half-collapsed building a few yards away. She hadn't announced her own presence to the group until right then with a 'hello' behind them that made Thomas jump near out of his skin. "Bloody hell!"

The Hulk picked itself up off the ground, shook it's head and let out a roar of disapproval. Invulnerable or not that last blast to the face had hurt and the Big Green was far from pleased, now if there was only something else to punch...

Except there wasn't and that made Hulk sad.

"Stupid metal man" the monster growled, rubbing the back of it's head.

Shane wasn't entirely sure what to say. It was one thing to have the memories and powers of a god but to actually put them to use? She didn't have the words, didn't really care to define what she was feeling and as fast the adrenaline rush had hit it was fading.

"Holy shit" she muttered under her breath. The battle may have been over and looking around now the fight may been the easy part, clean up was going to be a bitch. Shane kept that thought to herself as more Avengers appeared on the scene, victory was often a short lived thing and it only seemed to fair to let everyone have their moment. Without thinking she touched James on the shoulder just to reassure herself that he was fine and still here.

Henry had used his powers before. Just five years in the future, and this was nothing like what he'd needed to do then. But he had stood besides a god and fought a giant, and worked with his team, and worked alongside another team.

And he hadn't needed to do much. He was the black mage of his team, so he was good with throwing a few elementals around. But it was the protective side that was the most help.

So he'd thanked god for making him an athlete and went to do what James had told them to do before: crowd control. Except it had become more like protect crowd from being killed by their homes and cars, but whatever. This was when Billy's shields were super handy; all he'd done was raised his hands, protecting people. He could send cars flying down the street, stop falling rock, fly back and forth, transporting large groups of people.

He could do anything. Standing next to Shane, he gave a jerky nod. "Holy shit." Said softly, but then it was like it all hit at once. "Holy shit!" They had won! Sure, there was the clean u, which he was helping out with, but.

"Holy shit! Did you see what we just did!?" He took off to his other Young Avengers and whoever they were standing with. "Guys! Holy shit!"

"Hell yeah we saw it! Way to rock, Wiccan." Holly grinned tiredly, having just detached herself from Colby's open palm once it was close to the ground and leaped off with a childish 'whoop'. Some of the older Avengers still seemed to be in some stage of dazed disbelief, leave it to the Young Avengers to immediately start celebrating.

In the midst of the laughing and cheering, Samantha had been making her way to the rest of the group through the smoke and dust rising in the air. She hadn't arrived on time like most (save for Tweedle-dee and Tweedle-dumb who were still arguing over the merits of asking someone for directions) but she'd gotten to the scene in time to do some good. There were still a few unfortunate casualties, but all in all, the Avengers had saved the day. Now the fight was over, or so it seemed, and they could all breathe for a second.

Until the foreboding sound of crunching iron and a whirring from deep inside the damned thing's mouth made a few of them jump and Samantha whip out her semi-automatic, the terrified shrieks of bystanders nearby on the ruined block drowning out the Avenger's groans. Here we go again? James was the first to really react, and mercifully, that was all that was needed. With a ferocious sound akin to a roar, James crossed over to the resurrecting Destroyer in a few long strides, bringing the hammer down hard on its head and smashing it into a few dozen pieces with a loud clanging.

Thomas yelped and Samantha rolled her eyes, hair whipping around her face as she looked up to the helicopters marked by SHIELD beginning to descend on the area now. Of course, she'd alerted Jacob to the situation before she'd left for it herself. The Avengers did the fighting, now SHIELD was going to do the clean up. Just like old times.

"Think it's down for good this time?" She asked, eying the hunk of armor on the ground warily before holstering her gun and looking to her friends, her expression now all business. "SHIELD will take it from here."
