WHO: Virginia May
WHEN: Sunday evening.
WHERE: Her home.
WHAT: The anon message (THANKS LOGAN)
WARNINGS: HULK OUT
When the unmarked envelope arrived Virginia didn't think too much of it. She let it sit on top of a pile of unopened bills and junk catalogs for most of the day before a long delayed suspicious feeling lodged itself in the back of her brain while she was in the middle of a raid with her World of Warcraft guild.
"BRB, guildies." She took off her headset before any of the well deserved curses directed her way could be heard and made her way downstairs. The pile of mail hadn't moved and the envelope remained perched precariously on top. Picking it she wandered into the kitchen, sat at the counter and unceremoniously dumped out the contents.
The photograph that lay before her made time stop. For what felt like an eternity Virginia did not move, she stayed frozen and stared at the family she hadn't been a part of since her first 'incident'. Their faces had changed but they still looked the same. Despite the years and distance between them she knew them and there was an ache, sudden and vice-like in her chest that reminded her that for all her feigned indifference she missed them, she missed what could have been.
"Where did the envelope come from?" Virginia might have been caught up in her emotions but Banner wasn't. He was always paranoid and Virginia's strong response to the photo made him nervous.
"I don't know." She answered out loud. There was nothing special about the envelope, no discernible marking that stood out and made its intent clear.
"Virge. We've got to figure this out. Call into the Agency and see if-"
"SHUT UP." No, not good and she knew it and it was with shaky hands that she reached for one of her many prescription bottles. Pink, yellow, blue...the pill didn't matter so much as the affect. Swallowing a handful she shook her head.
"Don't do this, please...we'll figure it out and..."
"Engh."
Twenty minutes later she passed out on the stairs, her last thought being that she really didn't care she hadn't made it to the bedroom. When she next awoke it was to the smell of burning rubber and as she lurched into the kitchen the insidious green words flickered and wavered over the remnants of her family's faces.
"No, no, no."
"Calm down, calm down for the love of god, CALM DOWN"
Something inside Virginia broke and the monster that she and Banner tried so hard to keep down rushed forward and burst through the cracks.
"NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO"
