Who: Shane Redson (Open to James)
What: Contemplations
Where: Las Cruces, New Mexico
When: Saturday night
Warnings: None
The desert was a lot colder at night than she had expected. Not that it mattered much, she was used to 40 below zero in Alaska and that combined with the more than hardy Asgardian blood that ran through her veins meant that Shane hadn't bothered with a jacket, hadn't bothered with much more than jeans and a tank top because colder than she had expected didn't translate to being cold. She wasn't sure what she was doing out here, sitting on the hood of the car that had remained unused since her arrival. Sif's sword lay across her lap, a cigar dangled from her lips and the cell phone she had yet to answer was currently clutched in her left hand.
Life had turned into a whirlwind of new and old emotions. It wasn't unpleasant though it was mildly confusing and as much she was enjoying the ride old habits died hard and the unavoidable practical part of her nature had started to kick in.
James was the first thing on her mind, Shane blamed Sif for that. Thor was always on the goddess' mind and easy as it might have been to pawn of her recent behavior on the goddess she housed Shane knew that wasn't entirely true nor would it be fair. James was the kind of man that most women fantasized about at least once in their lives. Had circumstance been different, if their encounter had been more random with no reincarnates involved Shane would have wanted him for a little awhile, would have worked to have him though she would have left the moment things started to get serious. There didn't seem to be any chance of that now. For as often as they had been parted Thor and Sif may as well have been bonded at the hip. There was no separating the two. Not for long at least and that...that was as scary as it was exciting.
She had over a dozen missed calls on her phone and likely just as many voice messages. She wasn't about to listen to them or read the pile of texts that had set the red indicator light to blinking the moment she had told family and work she was leaving for an undetermined amount of time. If she wanted (or needed) a reason to go back she could find one in all those ignored messages.
Smirking around her cigar Shane used a little of the strength she'd kept hidden for so long and crushed the phone in her hand. As she watched the pieces fall to the ground she felt a small trickle of satisfaction from Sif.
"There's no need to be smug, lady." Shane didn't normally speak out loud to herself but right now acting outside her norms was par for the course. Picking up the sword she held it up toward the sky and felt Sif's satisfaction increase a hundred fold. "I don't know what I'm doing."
She let the sword fall, watched it sink blade first into the dirt and remain upright. Leaning back against the hood of the car she looked up at the night sky and all the stars therein.
I'll figure it out. One way or another I'll find my answers and a thousand more questions."
