The cirque was making their rounds through the Midwest again. Cora hated and loved the Midwest; hated it because it was nothing but flat land and covered in corn fields. Loved it because, predictably, that was where the most sick of the sick fucks seemed to congregate. She and Caleb had been busy. On their fourth night the troop had arrived in Iowa, land of the hicks and their corn, and the pair hadn't wasted any time. A man by the name of Merle Wyatt, he was a mailman. Cora and Caleb had been tracking his peculiar moves for three days now, and they finally had enough to pin him with. Women between the ages of 18-30 had been disappearing all over the area for a couple months now and no one seemed to be able to figure out how. But Cora knew. After what happened to her and to Lumen, their instincts were razor sharp. Maybe too sharp, in a way that made it impossible for her to see anything else sometimes, but Cora didn't care. She wanted to get this asshole and make him pay for his crimes.
The bodies of all the women were found out in corn fields. Naked, signs of rape and severe beatings, and they all came from the town of Cedar Rapids. It hadn't taken Caleb long to pin point a suspect, and from there, all they had to do was follow the killer's pattern. This monster was a mailman, he used his daily route to hand pick his victims. He even marked their homes, using a red chalk to make a crude dash in the pavement on the sidewalk by the women's houses. This man marked them to come back later and take them from their own homes. If Cora wasn't already pissed before, as soon as she and Caleb figured out how he did it, her blood was practically boiling. So all things considered, this kill should have been more than a little satisfying? Not so much. Tonight was the night, but like so many nights lately, the pair of serial killers were more than a little distracted. You could blame that on their families, because Cora sure as hell was.
"... Huh?" Cora blinked herself out of her daze, looking up from where she'd been staring intently at their target wrapped in plastic, flashing Caleb a sheepish look where he stood on the other side of the table. Shit. How long was I like that? She felt guilty for mentally checking out in the middle of a kill, something she'd never done before, but her phone had beeped in her jeans pocket signaling another alert. It did that every time there was activity from her sister Cory on the boards, and the alert sound itself had been enough to distract Cora completely from the task at hand. "Fuck. Sorry. What did you say?"
