If it had been possible to wear a hole in to the hardwood floor of her home, Maya would have caused the entire second floor of her parents’ home come caving in. River was going nonstop inside her head – counting footsteps between counting seconds between messages from some people she didn’t actually know. You know. But it is a masquerade now. Masks, masks, everywhere they will be. Faces changed but still will be them. No, she really didn’t know these people. They can say whatever they want and Maya just had to go with it because River believed it to be true. This could just be internet predators that have liar reincarnates, but she’s supposed to just go along with whatever? The nerves made her body hum with pent up energy and the sick twisting in her gut as she paced circles from the front windows to her room, River’s combat boots thudding heavily against wood.
Her parents were home, having been speaking in hushed tones until the light clicked off that she could see from beneath their closed door. Her father had attempted to speak to her early, but Maya ended up just snapping, “别看我,”at him before he dropped trying to engage her at all. It was these moments that she was mostly glad for parents who kept their distance. They still had no idea how to deal with her.
Perhaps it was better to take a chance with some people who said they did know how to deal.
Maya had packed a few things – enough to fill a duffel bag with careful rolling and smashing of clothes and things she couldn’t just leave home. The brief letter she left on the counter was simplistic metaphorical lines that subtly said she may be gone for a while. She didn’t really plan this much further than River wanting to be near the crew of that ship. Maya didn’t know what to do with herself besides continually peek out the front window, wondering if they were going to show.
