Who: Gavin James and Jamie Dinozzo
What: The two detectives investigate a murder. The married couple in their heads makes that a little difficult.
Where: A MURDER SCENE. In Brooklyn.
When: Thursday morning around 7 AM, October 18th, 2012
Warnings: Uh. Language. Lots of language. Also the aforementioned murder.
Even though the sun was just barely coming up over the horizon, Gavin was glad when he got the call from dispatch. It wasn't that he couldn't sleep, you see. Just that when he did, it was badly and not for very long, and he had no idea why. The job wasn't any more stressful than usual (kinda), the world was just as fucked up as it always was (plus a little extra), and for the first time in a long time, Gavin's life seemed to be normal (except that it wasn't). Still, if he'd actually thought about it for longer than a second, it wouldn't be so hard to see why he couldn't sleep. His life was pretty fucking far from normal, had been since Luke Cage came along and his new partner followed shortly after. The world was more fucked up than ever, and the job? Shit. The job was impossible.
Over the past few weeks, he'd just gotten really good at telling himself otherwise, or telling himself not to think about it. Wasn't like he could really blame Dinozzo for being the reincarnate of his reincarnate's wife (and the mother of my baby girl, Luke grumbled) – she hadn't asked for this, and neither had he, so for the most part? They ignored it. Didn't say shit about Luke or Jessica to each other, just did their jobs and went their separate ways once the day was over. That was about the only way to handle something like this without requesting a new partner, which wasn't even an option – for Gavin, at least. Sure, Luke wouldn't let him, but before they'd found out about each other, he and Dinozzo had been partners long enough to have each other's backs. That wasn't something you sacrificed just because things got a little uncomfortable between you. Any cop could tell you that.
He called her as soon as he got off the phone with dispatch, letting her know where to go and telling her where to meet him. He kept things short and didn't apologize for waking her up – he wasn't sure if he had, but then again, it was early, earlier than usual. He stared at his phone for a minute after he hung up, then made a face and stuck it in his back pocket before throwing his jacket on. He didn't really know why he did that. Didn't want to think about what he was thinking about. Tended to be simpler if he didn't.
The drive passed by in a blur, and the sun was up by the time he got to the scene, more or less. The street was barricaded – fire truck on one side, three or four police car on the other with the good ol' coroner's van thrown in the mix. Gavin waved his badge at the patrolman, went inside the apartment building, and ducked under the yellow tape once he found the source of the commotion, raising an eyebrow and setting his jaw at what he saw inside. "Fiechter," he called out at the nearest uniform, pulling the blue latex gloves over his hands and trying not to sound too angry. Didn't really work. "Care to tell me what the fuck I'm lookin' at here?"
Officer Fiechter barely spared Gavin a glance. "Double homicide," he intoned drily, flipping through his notebook instead of looking at what was right in front of him. "Or possible murder/suicide, ain't sure which yet. Got a male and female victim, both shot at close range. No gun so far, but my guess is the killer used a shot gun. She, as you can see, is all over the livin' room – hope you find a ID for her, 'cause there ain't no way you're gettin' dental – and he's, uh. A little ways up the hall. If she's one that did 'im, I sure hope he deserved it, 'cause it ain't pretty, James. Ain't pretty at all."
Gavin's eyes scanned the room, lingering on the body sitting straight up on the sofa. The wall was peppered with half her head, but... straight up, hands folded, and no gun? Gavin shook his head. There was something off about that. "Nobody's touched 'em? The bodies, I mean?" he asked the officer, still frowning at the dead girl. Something real off.
"Nah, man. We been waiting for you and your partner. Where is she, anyhow?"
