Who: Juno Winters and Nick Turner
What: Juno goes out on patrol (alone) and meets a vampire. Oh, snap!
Where: Sunnydale Cemetery
When: Thursday night, August 9th, 2012
Warnings: Don't let the "what" fool you. Angst and violence are probably a given.
Juno wasn't a stranger to cemeteries. Maybe some girls made it to the age of 23 without going to a single funeral, but not her, unfortunately. Just like Buffy, that had never been in the cards for her, and she'd seen more than her fair share of death. Her aunt and her cousins when she was five, her first boyfriend when she was nineteen, her mother ten months ago, and Sabrina's sister only recently – too many funerals in too short a time, but that was life for you. When you least expected it, it pulled the rug out from under you and left your world a broken mess.
Only Juno wasn't broken, because she always expected it. Ever since the day her aunt had driven her children and her two nieces into a tree on purpose, Juno never stopped feeling like she was just barely outrunning Death, and since it couldn't catch her, it seemed to be settling for her loved ones instead. Now Juno only had her sister left (and Buffy's friends, couldn't forget them), and no one would be taking them from her. No one. Which was more or less the only reason why she'd started dedicating herself to life as a Slayer – quietly, of course. The death of Sabrina's sister had been a rude awakening for her, proof that she wasn't doing what she was supposed to. Realistically, she knew she couldn't protect everyone, but if she couldn't protect her loved ones and their loved ones too, then what good was she?
Not any, and that was the simple truth. Since Ashlyn's funeral, Juno spent more and more time in Sunnydale, to the point where she was here almost every night. Practicing, training, patrolling – doing everything in her power to make herself better. She familiarized herself with this cemetery again, staked any vampires that dared showed their ugly faces, and went back home bruised and exhausted and sour because of Buffy's backseat driving. There was always something she could be doing a little better. A move she wasn't doing quite right, because she was still an amateur. Juno knew what Buffy was doing. Nothing motivated her better than a constant reminder that she wasn't good enough, and so every night, she made herself a little better.
Tonight was no different, at least at first. Just after sunset, Juno walked into the cemetery liked she own the place and scoped the perimeter once before she parked herself on a tombstone and waited. She whistled a song that was stuck in her head (one of the themes from Inglourious Basterds tonight) and threw her stake up in the air and caught it, over and over again. Didn't stop when she heard some telltale steps behind her. Finishing the melody, she tossed the stake high in the air and caught it, palm down. "That's a bingo!" she grinned, and she whirled around, ready to do what she was learning to do best. Kill some vamps.
