Who: Jett Doyle and Caroline Ross, with guest appearances by Lisette Ross and Benjamin Bone
What: In order to carry out orders for the Resistance, Jett has to do something extreme. It's a challenge he's more than ready for.
Where: The Agency HQ in London
When: Friday evening, August 3rd, 2012
Warnings: Violence and character death.
Friday unfolded like any other day at first, but then, days of tragedy always did. Those who worked for the Agency woke up every morning expecting disaster, yet when it came, they were always surprised. Always taken unawares. Like deep down they expected the world to change overnight, and they were forever disappointed when it didn’t. That sort of fatalistic optimism was the Agency’s biggest weakness – not its transparent neutrality, as many thought. That expectation that they would win, simply because they were better. Because that’s how it was in the stories. Right always triumphed over might.
Jett Doyle disagreed, but he kept that to himself, of course. His reincarnate had undergone some existential changes since Kane Lewis had died and Jett acquired Carrion soon after, but there was no Candy in this life to make those changes stick. Christopher Carrion was a product of Midnight, raised by a woman darker than the blackest abyss on Gorgossium, and that was the Carrion who belonged in this world. Not the redeemed corpse who helped Candy defeat his grandmother’s plans for an Absolute Midnight. Jett could pretend to be the new Carrion, using his magic for the good of the cause, but underneath the facade his nightmares stewed, eager for release.
Thank A’zo and Cha Willa Thompson had given him her blessing, and a target. Friday unfolded like any other day, but it was amazing what could change in just an hour. Light could become dark. Death replaced life. Friday was not any other day.
