Jess wanted to fucking kill something. It had already been over a week since they'd gotten Ava Prince and Sara Taft back, but just how much of them they'd gotten back? That was a whole other matter entirely. The girls had been trackerjacked, something that anyone would know about if they'd read the Hunger Games books, but something only a lucky few would know about first hand. Johanna hadn't been given the tracker jacker venom herself when she'd been held prisoner in the Capitol, but she'd been on the other side of a wall while Peeta had been continuously tortured with the stuff. Kinda left an impression on a girl.
Part of her felt like she didn't have any right to be here. Even though Johanna had been there to see what it'd done to Peeta, what did Jess know about it? Nothing, really. Unless Sara and Ava had been tortured with electrical shocks and water, she really didn't have much in the way of actual contribution to the problem, but she was here anyway. Mostly for Hunter, even if she wouldn't say it. Jess just wasn't the sentimental type anymore than Johanna was, but they both knew that Hunter needed someone maybe as much as the girls did. The girls needed him because he knew what they were going through, but Jess and Johanna had suspected that this might still be a struggle for him and Peeta. And normally if there was a Hunter sized problem her first instinct would be to go to Inez, but considering she was Katniss and this was a trackerjack situation, she really didn't want to risk triggering Hunter and his reincarnate at the most inconvenient time.
So, when Hunter had first asked her to come with him to see the Resistance's latest victims, Jess had gone without a word of protest. Now they'd been observing them for over a week, and with little to no change. For the first few days they weren't sure what to do with the girls, so they'd had them tying knots since that had seemed to have a calming affect on Finnick and Katniss when they'd gotten uppity. The method had worked well enough, especially for Sara who was something of a sailor in her own right, but it wasn't enough. Not by a long shot. The girls were still as warped and scared as ever, and they couldn't just have them tying knots forever. Jess was impatient, and angry on their behalves. Logic told her that it was more important right now to focus on getting them better, but the larger part of her knew that would take too long and just wanted to find some Resistance assholes so she could smash their faces in.
"God," she groaned suddenly, interrupting the short silence from where she was lying on her back on an empty hospital bed just outside the rooms Ava and Sara were being kept in. She and Hunter had come out here to talk amongst themselves without alarming the girls, and Jess was getting twitchy so of course her tact filter was plummeting even further. "Why couldn't they like baking? At least we'd have an easy answer if they could bake some fucking cakes."
