It was just another day at the office for Adrian. Except the magical singing people were gone, which in his book, was a good thing. Oh, it was all fun and games the first few dozen times, but after that it just got kind of creepy and old. Even good-natured Adrian had to admit it had grown annoying. But it seemed as if things were back to normal. Or what passed for normal around these parts. Some of the deliveries had been late, as had been some of the employees. Everyone was stressed out, and Adrian's usual easy smile was showing signs of strain. For once in his life, he had felt the temptation to orb out of the restaurant in the middle of lunch rush, and that simply wasn't right. What happened? A week or two weeks ago, he had been perfectly content with his life! He loved this place, at least he still thought he did! No, he did. Owning his own diner had been his dream since he was a kid, and he had achieved it. Was that it? Now that he had it, it was no longer a goal, a challenge? And his personal life had been on track too. He was engaged, and they'd set a date for this year! But Angie had been acting all weird since New Year's happened and he hadn't come home because he drank too much and ended up crashing at Patrick's house, even though he couldn't quite remember drinking that much. But that wasn't the point. Angie was off, like she was jealous of Patrick or something! That was ridiculous, wasn't it? Adrian hadn't acted on any of those... impulses since they had been together. He'd been a good and faitful boyfriend, now fiancé. He couldn't help but think that maybe it was an excuse. Maybe it was Angie who was having second thoughts.
Ugh, too much thinking! He had three orders to bring out, and two deliveries to make down the street. He did the former, coming back to the kitchen twice because someone had gotten the orders wrong. He finally blew up at the kitchen staff and some of the wait staff who had been in there getting things. "Get your act together, guys! Damn, you know I don't like to be this guy, so don't make me! Just... just do what you usually do! Okay? I'm gonna walk these deliveries over, 'cause I need a breather. When I come back we'll work out a break schedule. I think we all need a breather." He double checked the orders himself, and took off his apron on his way out, barely nodding at customers as he did, when he usually would have had a smile and a few words for everyone. It was just not a great day.
The crisp January afternoon air helped clear his head a little, and he was in a better mood by the time he made his deliveries. All that remained was to walk back to the diner, and hopefully the sky wouldn't start falling on the way there. The way that day had been going, he wouldn't be surprised.
