Every month it was always the same.
Her bones snapped and her body broke. Every twist, every crunch, every stretch of her skin echoed through the woods like paper. No amount of wolfsbane could save her from this, the all consuming agony of being torn apart and reshaped from the inside out.
It was like being born over and over again in the most horrific way imaginable, biting and tearing its way out of her womb.
I'll never be able to have a child of my own.
Twenty-eight days out of the month, she walked around in someone else's skin. The animal inside her gnawing, trying to claw its way to the surface. Even after each transformation, the realities of her condition weighed heavily on the werewolf's shoulders. She'd never be able to walk in the full moonlight on her own two feet. Her body forever a war zone, she'd never be able to give birth, to see her love reflected in the eyes of a child.
That never used to matter to her, until now.
Pale, yellow eyes shifted to the small, canine form loping along beside her through the forest of the place their other halves used to call home. Even in her present form, some part of the wolf felt comfort in this routine and the loyal companion who never left their side.
Small sacrifices, for the things you still got to keep.
We're keeping you this time.
Tomorrow Zoë would be tired. Her true nature took so much out of her that sometimes she could barely stand in the morning, naked and sometimes bruised and bloodied but she'd long stopped looking in mirrors for a few days after. At least it was her own blood. At night she dreamed of tearing out throats so often that sometimes she actually thought they were real.
The cold wind blew through the trees and did its best to seep in between its fur but the wolf merely let out a soft howl, raising its head to the sky in a show of obedience. Everyone was a slave to something.
Tonight it was just to the moon.
