Avery had done a lot of stupid things in her life time, but this was by far the dumbest. Actually the past week and some change had been a series of the dumbest things Avery could do. First she was on duty with Graham one afternoon and thought it'd be a good idea to get in the path of a bullet during a tense disagreement in a convenience store. Luckily the bullet had hit her in the shoulder and had gone straight through, so far there was no infection and the wound was already healing, but best of all she didn't have to wear a stupid sling. ... Or it was entirely possible that the doctor had told her she needed to wear one for a week or two and she'd stopped wearing it after three days. That's what the pain killers and booze was for.
Of course, that combination is probably what helped get her into the latest mess she'd managed to stick herself in. She'd been avoiding Graham for the last three days, ever since her conversation with the asshole on the boards that had more or less blackmailed her into the Resistance. She still wasn't completely sure how that had happened. There had been vicodin and tequila, logging onto the internet and a lot of talking that had somehow gotten hostile without her noticing it but she knew one thing for sure. He'd threatened Graham's life if she didn't comply, and that wasn't a decision she had to think about. Even if it was just another stupid decision of hers to tack onto the end of the week.
That was the thing about Graham that was even harder for Avery to admit than most things. He made her stupid. When he was around she did stupid things like let herself be blackmailed on his behalf and jumping in front of bullets so he wouldn't have to be the one to get hit. Yes, he was her partner, but it was more than that and it had been for some time, though she couldn't figure out when it'd all changed. Maybe when she'd found out he was the reincarnate of Boyd Crowder, because then she had Ava in the back of her head all damn day making it even more impossible to resist Graham than it already had been.
She held quite the torch for him. As was evident by her recent actions as of late but that wasn't the sort of thing that Avery Carter ever came out and just said. She was much better at pretending that nothing was going on between them, much more of a pro at avoiding everything and shooting people at the dinner table than actually confronting hard truths. And the hard truth was that Graham Wyatt had been in her heart for some time now but now she was really stuck because of it and she didn't know what to do. It would figure that Avery's one and only weakness would turn out to be a damn Crowder boy. And of course she couldn't tell him what she'd agreed to because then he'd ask her why she'd done it and then she'd have to tell him the rest too. Nope. Not happening.
So, she avoided. When they were together she didn't say a word about any of this and she spent all the time that she could in her own house, though that didn't help her sleep any. The past few nights it had been storming but now she had nothing to blame it on when it was fast approaching one A.M. and she was lying in bed still wide awake with no chance of rain. So when she heard a faint knock coming from her front door she knew exactly who it was, though she took her time getting to the door to answer it anyway because she knew if Graham was on the other side of it her avoiding days were about to be over. That thought made her grimace as she opened the door wide, squinting into the darkness with what she hoped passed as annoyance. She'd never admit that she was glad to see him either. "I've said it before and I'll say it again. You really need to get a hobby, Graham. It's one o'clock in the damn morning."
