Who. Liz Barry
What. Moving on
Where. Manhattan, New York
When. Friday night, July 22 2011
Warnings. None
To any careful observers who happened to be looking up at the night sky at exactly 2:22 AM, they would have seen a tiny ball of light appearing out of nowhere and falling fast to Earth. So fast that unless you already knew where to look, you would have missed it entirely. A few minutes later Liz Barry straightened up behind a few trees in the middle of Central Park, now at her full size and that faint tinkling sound diminishing to a silence as she brushed off a bit of golden dust from her shoulder and emerged onto the street.
Home sweet home.
She'd been back from Neverland for over a week now but she'd spent every moment wishing she hadn't come back, that is until tonight. Liz, like Tink, wasn't one to ever admit to her weaknesses even if they did nothing but show them. They wore every single, once at a time emotion that they felt on their sleeves, and as it had been true for Tink, it had been true for Liz. Peter was her one and only true weakness, and now he was gone.
Liz had grown up with Jamie just as Tink had Peter, and everywhere she looked all she saw was his stupid smiling face. At first it had only made her angry, then nothing but sad. And now? She was turning her grief into a bitter sort of acceptance as she finally found her way back home.
Contrary to Tink, Neverland wasn't actually Liz's home. Nor was her little apartment in Orlando, Florida. It wasn't the Agency, and it certainly wasn't the 'Happiest Place on Earth' that she hated working at more than she hated that time of the month. It was New York. The one place she'd ventured to all on her own, without Jamie and Peter, and that was where she'd come to say her final goodbyes to the boy they'd always love.
She walked down the sidewalk hurriedly, arms crossed protectively over herself as she stared with determination at the ground, only feeling more sorry for herself with every step she took. It was only in the absence of Jamie that she really realized just what a sad individual she was. In the city that never sleeps, Liz was just as miserable as everyone else still awake at this hour.
"Hey, watch it lady!" Liz didn't even notice the man she bumped into, she only stopped in her tracks a few feet away when he yelled at her and she turned around to glare at him. The first thing she noticed was that he had blond, curly hair, and for a minute all she saw was Jamie which made her glare immediately falter.
"Oh. I'm- I'm sorry. I didn't mean- sorry." Then she turned and ran.
The buildings and street signs blurred in her vision the faster she went, veering around corners and speeding up on the straightaways, paying no attention to all the people staring at the curly haired brunette leaving a trail of fairy dust behind her as she ran past them. She couldn't remember the last time she'd run instead of flew, she'd almost forgotten how much she loved it. Even flying couldn't get her heart pumping like this, the pure adrenaline flowing through her body at such a powerful rate.
She ran for what seemed like forever, until her feet were numb and her vision was partially blinded by the tears in the corners of her eyes, forced out of her ducts by the wind beating sharply against her front while she ran. Then as suddenly as she started, she stopped. It was sudden and unplanned, she could have kept going for hours but something had made her skid to a halt that she didn't notice until she'd caught her breath and straightened up.
She was standing under a low archway next to a public fountain, and with another jolt of recognition she knew this place like she would have known her own mother if she ever saw her. This was the first place she'd spent the night when she'd come to New York, all those years ago after running away from the orphanage. Right after she'd gotten Tink and before she'd found Jamie again. Their Peter.
With a strangled choking sound, Liz lunged forward onto her knees beside the fountain and bent over it to splash cold water on her face. She did it again and again and again until she was done crying, washing her tears away the moment they emerged. It was like being born anew, washing away the sins of the past and finding the courage to press forward. As she finally sat back she knew that's exactly what she would do, but first. She was going to sleep here for awhile and get reacquainted with her old self. The Liz Barry that could indeed move on without him.
