Who. Inez Vargas & Hunter Mitchell
When. Wednesday night, July 13, 2011
Where. Hunter's house.
What. Hunter finds out about the Capitol.
Rating. PGish, I'm sure.
Something happened when Inez discovered that the Capitol was now, like the Arena, very much a part of their everyday lives. Naturally, her first instinct was still to reach for a shot-glass filled to the brim with whiskey, but the desperation for that soothing relief was washed away by something much more poignant. Hunter; through Peeta, he had so many terrible memories associated with the Capitol. So much torture. Inez wasn’t even sure how that girl Ann—Allie—was handling it. Inez was like a chord that had suddenly tightened and snapped into place. It was a controlled feeling she hadn’t experienced ever since Katniss had awoken inside of her. It was calming. She may have wanted to run—to put as much distance between herself and the Capitol as she possibly could, but there was no way she could do that. She couldn’t leave Ben, this Allie girl, and of course, she couldn’t leave Hunter. Katniss had faced the Capitol once before and had become more or less victorious. Big shoes to fill, and all that, but Inez was, at long last, up for the challenge.
Telling him… that was going to be the part that royally sucked. She had almost taken the cowards way out by calling Hunter so she didn’t have to see the look on his face when the memories started bubbling to the surface. He didn’t deserve that kind of bullshit, and after a great deal of pep-talks to herself, Inez had to muster up the courage to make the trek to Hunter’s house to inform him that the last place he ever wanted to see was here. Picturing the look on his face was easy; she could imagine all of the things that would flicker across his face from surprise to disdain to absolute horror. That was how she’d felt when she discovered the Arena was kicking around. Inez had wanted to curl up into a ball and drink herself into oblivion. Hunter had been there with her through all of that, and now, well, she was going to be there for him.
She really wished she could have had a drink before showing up, though, if just to calm some of her nerves.
Inez arrived at his front door. She knew the place well (even sober). For a few seconds she hesitated, even considering bailing out on this and running in the opposite direction before he could find her standing there like a freaking moron. Eventually she just bit the bullet. Inez put her hand on the doorknob, twisted it, and walked right in without knocking, like it was a totally customary thing to do. “Yo, I’m here to rob you,” she announced into the empty hallway; her way of greeting. Rue came running at her on all fours, bounding happily towards the familiar voice. Inez leaned down and greeted the dog in a sort of half-hug, her fingers running through the soft mane of hair. “Maybe you should start locking your door. I’m sure the infamous Charlie Humphrey still has a few fans out there that would walk right into their house on the off chance they’d see you strutting around in the buff.”
