Who: Ted Holloway / Batman.
When: Friday evening.
Where: Gotham City, GCPD rooftop.
What: Batman announces himself. Publicly.
Rating/Warnings: None.
For the last few days, Ted had gone back and forth about turning on the signal. He'd already been seen in the city; honestly, most of the Bat sightings in the last six months had been Ted, not Kyle. He'd been quiet about it, slowly and painstakingly reminding Gotham's crooks that there was a Batman and that they should look nervously over their shoulders. Turning on the signal was different. It wasn't just fights in alleyways and crooks tied to things with notes for Gordon's department. It wasn't just anonymous tips to the few straight cops, or crime scenes all but giftwrapped for those who showed up to answer the call. When the Batsignal went on, he'd be inviting the costumed set to come out and play. It was a dangerous idea, but putting on the cowl had been a dangerous idea. Bruce said that they were ready. The patrolling they'd done over the last half-year had been a warm-up. Now it was time to give Arkham's most dangerous a target besides the citizens of Gotham, besides other reincarnates, the Robins and the Agency and who-knew-who-else. That's what Batman was for; to be a target. And that's why Ted hadn't been allowed to 'fess up. Admitting to having an obscure Robin was bad enough. The second the secret ID was out of the bag (to anyone, Bruce insisted), they might as well sign a death sentence for the entire Holloway family. Ted felt something sinking in his gut as he scaled the GCPD building. That was the thing about having a rock for a center, a resolute and solid place upon which to stand. Rocks also weighed you down and caused your stomach to plummet towards your feet. Ted knew he had to put himself out there, but he was a twenty-year-old guy and he was a little scared. It was stupid not to be apprehensive. It would've meant he was overconfident, and Bruce said that was the sort of thing that got one killed. The cowled figure reached the top of the building. He hoisted himself over the edge and made his way to the signal. Working the switches came as easily as breathing - it was like he'd always known how to light the beacon. A large winged shape cast itself in light and shadow on the clouds above the city. Batman took exactly five seconds to appreciate what he'd done before grabbing for his grappling gun. Message sent. Now he needed to clear out before the GCPD made it up the stairs. |
