Who: Regan Sexton and Lane Smith What: Watching Lucy and Ting-yu's movies. Where: Their flat in London. When: Monday, April 11, early afternoon Warnings: Spoilers for Jekyll & Hyde and Re-cycle
There were a lot of things about Regan that Lane liked, but most of all he liked that she actually talked to him like an adult, an equal. One thing they'd talked about several times was the fact that neither of them had actually seen the source that their headmates came from, and that sometimes they were a little afraid of knowing how it all ended - especially since they could both see the similarities between themselves and their headmates, even if some of it was superficial. It had to mean something, Lane knew that much.
And so, yes, they'd talked about getting the movies many times without ever actually following through with the plan. Lane wasn't sure what had made this time so different in his head. Except, well, he had been watching one of those self-help shows on the telly, talking about facing your fears and knowledge being power and loads of rubbish like that. He'd had a little extra money in his pocket and it had just seemed like the world was telling him to do it.
The video rental store just a couple of blocks away wasn't that grand, and Lane figured that if they didn't have both the movies then obviously they weren't supposed to watch them after all. Ting-yu reminded him that there was another video place just a little bit further down, and he'd tried to think of excuses for why he didn't want to go on to that one: Regan would be awake before he got back if he had to go much further, or he just didn't know that area as well (which was a lie), or the man who ran it looked at him in a way that just made him feel dirty (which was the truth). It didn't matter, though, because by some odd coincidence the shoddy little store had Jekyll & Hyde - The Musical and Re-cycle in, and that left him with no more excuses, especially not good enough ones to hide the fact that he was just plain frightened of it from Ting-yu.
It was a strange combination of movies, but the bored-looking girl at the register didn't comment, just rang it up and announced his total in a voice that made him think she didn't really care if he paid it or not. He handed the correct notes over anyway. His nerves were already building as he waited for her to return his change, and then hand him the two plastic cases on the other side of the detector. The same nervous energy plagued him on the way home, though he told Ting-yu that he was only walking faster because Regan would probably be awake soon, and he wanted to have things ready before she did.
Getting things ready came down to setting the movies on the TV stand and making some popcorn - the microwave kind, they had the kernels to make it on the stove but the last time he'd tried more of it had ended up on the floor than in the bowl when he burned his hand on the skillet trying to pour it, and Regan had very nicely suggested they just stick with the bagged kind, because at least they didn't have to add their own butter and salt. Since he liked his with lots of both, that was a good enough argument that he could ignore the fact that being beat by corn and a hunk of metal hurt his pride quite a bit.
The scent of the popcorn, he figured, would probably rouse Regan enough to consider stirring from her bed a little earlier than usual. Just so she'd be in a decent mood when she did get up, he went ahead and put the kettle on for some tea. Hopefully, that would put her in a good enough mood that she wouldn't care that he'd gone out and rented their movies without asking first.
