The compromises we make..
Speaking Latin had become second nature to Ruby over the years. From the moment she was released from hell with the power of a great witch, she had spoke it. Every spell she knew was Latin in origin and she'd taught herself how to properly speak it. Mispronounced spells often led to trouble and things she didn't have the time nor patience to deal with. She'd been given a second chance and a golden ticket out of hell. Ruby was also given a mission and she felt it was her duty to complete it as payback to the whoever thought she was worthy of the challenge.
There were still moments when Ruby expected to find out she was still there. After spending over two hundred years of smelling smoke and feeling the heat, she still had moments where she couldn't believe she was walking the Earth again. Her one-way ticket there had been a result of a mistake, with a little bit of heroism thrown in. Ruby had taken her sister's place when Anne had called upon a powerful magic-demon to save their family from the plague. She had suffered the consequences and died. There was no happy reunion for Ruby in Heaven. Instead, she was thrust into the inner pits of hell and taunted. Those around her had wanted her to become like them, but she hadn't. For reasons beyond her, Ruby was spared and had kept her humanity.
Ruby would never know who picked her to battle Marcus that day but the prize was a shiny new soul and a ticket out of hell. So she went to the large room, which was full of weapons, and battled the older demon while the others watched. Some say the battle waged for days but Ruby didn't remember. By the end, she had won and was given a soul and made an immortal witch. She didn't know what she would do but that was quickly answered when she was told she was to watch over future Huntress Fred Burkle.
In all honesty, Ruby didn't want to babysit someone. She didn't want to be responsible for someone just because they were special. But then they reminded her about how she'd been given a second chance and that Fred's safety was important. It was enough for Ruby and she was pleasantly surprised to see how easy it was to watch Fred. The other woman had just gotten back from Pylea and she never left the hotel. Ruby had almost learned to like the job until Fred became brave and started to fight demons and vampires. Then there was The Beast and that bitch Jasmine. All small stuff compared to Fred's idiocy when she decided to work at Wolfram and Hart.
Ruby hated that Fred had eagerly followed Angel to the firm. She wanted to go up to her and tell her how moronic she was being but was stopped. She couldn't interfere. She had to watch from the sidelines and hope Fred didn't get killed. But she almost did when Illyria was unleashed on her. Ruby stood by, wondering if Angel was going to help Fred and when all he did was get on a damn jet, Ruby took matters into her own hands and took Fred from the firm's medical center, and brought her back to the house she shared with her contact Thom.
Fred was out of it and dying so Ruby allowed Thom, who was a vampire, to turn her. And then, after hours of researching, Ruby was given the go ahead to give Fred a soul and to activate her Huntress powers. It was ahead of schedule, and Ruby had been lectured about what she'd done, but in the end it was for the best.
"Hey, Ruby?"
Ruby looked up from the magazine she'd been reading and looked over at Thom. "What?" she asked.
"She's starting to wake up."
With a nod, Ruby stood up and threw the magazine on the coffee table. She started toward the bedroom but stopped to look at Thom. "She won't remember you're her Sire. I took out the connection with the spell because she can't be following you around when she has other things to do. So this means we tell her the vampire who turned her is dead. Got it?" she asked with a stern look.
Thom merely nodded and walked out the front door.
"Drama queen," Ruby muttered before going into the bedroom. The room smelled of and felt like magic. It coupled with the magic still buzzing in her body and Ruby felt a little light-headed. She would have to get rid of the buzz later but at the moment, Fred was the top priority. Stepping further in, she eyed the chains on Fred's body, knowing she could easily break out of them. After all, she was part vampire and part Huntress, and her strength was five times that of a normal vampire. Ruby just hoped Fred didn't attack her.
With a shuddering breath, Ruby moved closer to the bed and looked at Fred. "Hello, Fred," she finally said as she waited for a response.
