Who: Danielle and Samuel/Thoth
Where: Hosptial, Dani's room
When: Tuesday Evening
Rating: Medium at most, due to bad memories dug up.

The riots had given him a bunch of work, just from clients in the area, clines who gotten caught up in the riots, and everything else. And Samuel had thrown himself into that work with a fury that almost surprised even his co-workers. Thoth knew it was caused by another divine being, and it had tugged at the strings of balance, and he did what he could to right things to how they were supposed to be.

But the past few days the load had thinned out. Lower level lawyers were doing the footwork, and the higher level lawyers were making deals and plea bargains, and his workload had thinned quite considerably. So, perhaps it was good timing that he had gotten the message from Dani’s lawyer. A brow arched ever so slightly as he listened to the man before he hung up the phone.

It was perhaps good that he was in a very good mood as he made his way to the hospital. Being one of the Gods of Judgment for the Egyptians, he could sense the spirits moving about the hospital. But, this time, even they couldn’t bring down his mood. A very good lunch with Lucia/Ma’at had him in a very good mood as he made his way toward her room. A knock on the door before he opened it.

“Miss Karrigan?”

Danielle was feeling heady and heavy from lack of movement, and though she had only recently been given the okay to eat solid food, she wasn't hungry. Not in the slightest. What she was, was missing her kids. Among many other heavy emotions, worries, and thoughts.

Jordan. The fact that she'd killed a man. She saw that spray of blood each time she closed her eyes.

The knock and the voice pulled her thoughts back to the present. Dani squinted a little at the unfamiliar man in the doorway. Obviously not an orderly. Suddenly, she was extremely nervous.

"Who're you..."

He only had of the details, and even then, only enough not to be surprised by how she looked in the hospital bed. But, it wasn’t the first time, not even for Samuel. He had grown up in New York, after all. While the city wasn’t the most violent place in the world, there was enough of it.

“Samuel Mondschein, Miss Karrigan.” He said as he closed the door behind him and he walked over toward the bed. His motions would be easy to follow, in fact fairly exaggerated so that she could watch every arm movement and where his hands were. It wasn’t so much that he knew she was paranoid, but he had some experience dealing with trauma patients. If nothing else, through Thoth.

“I’m told you’re in a little bit of trouble, and you needed a defense lawyer. Though, your lawyer didn’t give me all the specifics, but I’m going to go out on a limb here and say it has something to do with why you’re in one of those paper dresses hospitals so enjoy.” He gave her an easy grin as he sat on the chair next to the bed and set his briefcase beside it. His hands would be folded in his lap, and one leg crossed over the other as he watched her.

Samuel. Sam, the lawyer. Her estate attorney had given her his name, but over the phone it hadn't clicked; she knew this man - at least, she knew him from the internet. She'd spoken with him casually. The same night she found Jordan - or Jordan found her.

Though the tension eased out of her shoulders and eyes and she gave him an acknowledging nod, the woman did not return his grin. She appreciated the attempt to make things easier through humor, but it wasn't going to happen. Not with her, not yet.

"Please, just call me Dani," she said quietly, motioning him in. "Close the door, would you?

The door was closed and he was in the chair beside the bed. “Dani it is.” He said with a slow nod. “Call me Sam then, or Samuel. My last name is a bitch for me to say, much less anyone else.” A grin was given toward her as he tilted his head and studied her for a moment.

His hands folded in his lap as he was silent for a moment, and let her collect her thoughts. “Before you continue, I should warn you that I am a civil lawyer.” A pause as his lips pursed together. “I can represent you in criminal matters, but my specialization is civil affairs.”

He was silent for another few moments before he added, “If need be, I’ll get you a criminal defense that I trust to be honest. But, only if this is over my head.” Sam then made a motion for her to speak.

Though she never quite lost the pensive look in her eyes, haunted as they were, Dani took a moment to think before pressing her lips and nodding. She understood.

"I think it's pretty cut and dry on the surface," she said cautiously. Her voice didn't reach much further than a whisper, and not just because she would be short of breath for at least three months after this. "A cousin of my ex attempted to kill the man I left him for, then came after me." Dani swallowed. "Billy McShane is the one who shot Kurt McKenzie and burned his night club. Then he followed me to the hospital, cornered me in the parking garage and threatened my kids if I didn't go with him. He made me drive out toward the piers, where I tried to wreck the car. He shot me in the leg, then dragged me out to finish me off."

The woman's hand, taped with tubes sticking out of the back, thin, fragile and wan, wiped lightly across her brow. "When I fought with him, the gun went off again..." She pointed to the bandage and stent in her chest. "I don't know how I got it away from him, but I got the gun and I shot him in the face."

He was silent as he listened, his lips pursed together in thought. Then, he reached down to pick up the medical board at the edge of the bed, and he brought that into his lap. He flipped each page and studied it for a moment before he looked up. “Wounds are consistent with that story.” He said after a moment. “Though, from the looks of things, you’re lucky the gun missed any major arteries.” She would’ve been dead long before the paramedics got there then.

“So this Billy McShane is the one who torched Le Chat Noir, shot and stabbed its owner.” All of that was in the news paper, though Thoth knew of the details through other sources. “And then he came after you, threatened your children if you didn’t go with him. Then, after her shot you, there was a struggle in which you got shot a second time before disarming Mr. McShane and you shot him in the face.” He considered her for a moment before he opened his briefcase and pulled out a handful of papers.

After he glanced through the papers, a police report on the evening in question, he glanced up at her. “Two questions. Did you disarm him before you shot him or did the gun go off during the struggle.” Samuel’s brow arched slightly as he asked the next question, “And why would your ex’s cousin come after you?”

"I don't really know what happened," she started, settling back into the pillow, letting her head list in Sam's direction, her eyes still slightly hazed by pain killers and weakness. "He paused, or something... I don't know, I just reacted. I hit his arm, trying to get him to drop it - that's when he got me in the chest, he had it pressed right here--" Dani lifted her hand again, this time touching two fingertips to her cheek. "He dropped it afterward and I picked it up. There was no way he wasn't gonna kill me. No way."

Danielle's eyes were on him, imploring, but as hard and brutally honest as they could manage. "My ex's cousin came after me because my 'ex' is Kevin McShane. Of Chicago."

She didn't know how much he knew about the Chicago families, but Kevin was known in the right circles, on both sides of the law. He'd ascended to his father's noteriety over the last ten years, and sad to say, Dani had been there at the grass roots.

“I’m not arguing that point.” Sam said as he gave her a slow nod. “But, if this goes to trial.. I don’t think it will, but if it does, you have to understand, that that fact will come up.” He watched her for a long moment. “Once the gun was in your hand, it could be argued that your life was no longer in danger, and you didn’t need to pull the trigger. You need to be prepared for people questioning that. I’m sure the jury will take your side, since I doubt he gave you a moment to think, and the injuries you already took..” he said as he motioned toward her bed. “But it is a possible question.”

His eyes seemed to phase for a moment as she told him who her ex was, and why the cousin had come after her. It would for a moment almost seem like he wasn’t paying attention at all, but in reality he was taking advantage of his unique position. Thoth’s memory was far superiore to his own, and that name had come up before. Might have been a news story, or a report somewhere, or even overhearing a cop, but the information was there in the back of his mind and Thoth shared it.

“Kevin McShane of Chicago.” He said in a soft voice as he pursed his lips together. “Which means your life is still in danger. I doubt he will take very well to you killing his cousin.”
