It was perhaps the reason why Samuel and Thoth got along as well as they did, such that they were almost one being. The only things they didn’t see eye to eye on were honestly things that mortals couldn’t comprehend. Even most gods didn’t understand Thoth’s strict belief on maintaining balance amongst the cosmos. That Order could not become stronger than Chaos, or Good could not overcome Evil. Most could not picture that a world ruled by Order would damn a world to hubris that was just as devastating as one damned to anarchy.
The touch of her hand, however, made Thoth’s eyes close. He forced himself to take a drink of the water, finishing half of the bottle in that moment before he turned his attention back toward her. “We reached an agreement before we left the café. He gets tonight with no interference unless he gets into trouble, and I get the afternoon to reconnect with a former lover.” He gave her a soft smile. But, her next words earned her a set of rolled eyes. “Was she being that troublesome, Ma’at?” It wasn’t so much a reprimand as it was a question. Ma’at was one of the few goddesses he had trusted with his life almost for his entire life. “But no, we won’t tell her, though I’m sure she’ll learn soon enough.”
“Near every spell ever written is in my book, whether by divine or mortal hands. One just needs to know the words to bring the incantation to the surface.” His fingers slipped into her hair, and he teased the nap of her neck as he considered her. “If it wasn’t that so much of us has been forgotten, I would be ashamed to say I don’t remember all the words. They will come back to me, though. So much has.” So much magic had returned to him, even if the world would not let him cast it.
