Her quiet voice didn't soften the blow of her words, as confusing as they were for a few moments. He didn't understand why she thought that. What could she have done? The last time they had fought like that, she had begged him to kill her. This time, it had been the opposite. That fact was crystal clear to him in a very uncomfortable way. "Only chance at what?" he asked, even as he realised what Daisy meant. He turned his head away, closing his eyes for a moment, while a slow exhale left his lungs. She thought that the other guy's persistence had overwhelmed him and caused him to kill those people. She thought he'd lost control. Robbie stood up abruptly and moved a few paces away. He shoved his hands together, used to the familiar sensation of the leather gloves against his skin, but he'd gotten rid of them en route to the bathroom. He wasn't going to look for them now; he was focused on something much more important. He had to tell her what had changed. He had to tell her the truth. "You don't get it," he said, glancing over his shoulder at her. She had wiped most of the blood off her face but there were still flecks visible, taunting and reminding him of what he'd done. "I didn't lose control. I let him out." A part of him didn't want to turn around, didn't want to face her. But after all they'd been through together, both here and back home, he owed her that much. "When Coulson, Fitz and I were gone, it left me. We were all being dragged down somewhere, and it didn't want to go back there. That's why it went into Mack," he explained, filling in the bits that she didn't know. They had been in the same place, but the barrier between dimensions had separated them -- the other guy had been the only connection between the two places. "I didn't want Mack to suffer that. He's a good man. He doesn't have vengeance in him. But it refused to let him go." He went quiet for a moment, as if it was difficult to recall the memories. In part, it was. "I knew I wouldn't survive that place without it, but I knew that it needed me too." He forced himself to look at Daisy, before he continued. "So I made a new deal. I promised that if it would give me my vengeance on Eli... and help me settle my score, then I would settle his -- all of his." |
