"This is ridiculous," Alisha grumbled, stretched out on the couch of her apartment, laptop strewn next to her. Talia was out on patrol and so she'd invited Eve over to do some work investigating the things that Athena pointed them toward. Perhaps it was that their takeout was taking far longer than the 45 minutes suggested or maybe that Alisha had very little patience, but she was finding it awfully hard to concentrate. "I mean, if she's going to ask us to look into this stuff, why isn't it official? Why can't we use DMS resources? It's not like finding out what APEX is up to is something we're not supposed to be doing, you know?" She groaned and shook her head. "I feel like just Google-searching isn't going to get us anywhere — we're not techno-metas or anything." Evie sat cross-legged on the carpet, laptop perched on the coffee table in front of her. “Zeus apparently doesn’t want her to look into it,” she said, scanning the “About Us” page of the way-too-purple website for Richards Storage Facility. “If we looked up anything in the DMS database, it would probably trigger something in the system. Then, we’d be stuck in lockdown while Agents Ginger and Blondie did a good cop, bad cop routine with the egg rolls we just ordered.” Eve’s eyes drifted to a line on the storage facility’s web page. ‘With secure, temperature controlled facilities to choose from, we take the option of your company losing its history off the table!’ She clicked another tab. ‘Parker Pharmaceuticals can trace it’s origins to the World’s Fair, a pivotal moment in Chicago history…’ Click. Garrick, Allen & West hopes to continue its history of providing prompt legal counsel to those in need… “The storage facility catered to local businesses,” Evie mused. “Parker and Garrick probably rented spaces there.” Alisha peeked over to see Eve's screen, then pulled up the same website on her own laptop. "Yeah, and how are we going to find out if they did or not without going into their office and looking through their files? Or their computer or something or—" she paused. "Maybe we could call them and make them think we work for Parker or Garrick?” Eve grinned. “Alisha, this is the start of a beautiful friendship. And I’ve got just the thing!” She dragged her messenger bag off the DMS-approved armchair and began to rifle through the contents, muttering herself, “I know it’s in here somewhere...” Finally, with a flourish, Eve pulled out a dull gray cell phone. “Ta-da! Burner phone, Alisha, Alisha, burner phone. I wasn’t sure what I’d need it for, but old habits die hard, and I like having things that don’t have the DMS logo stamped on them somewhere.” Eve placed the phone on the coffee table. “So, we have a way of calling them discretely, now we just a good cover story. One of us is an intern for Parker, maybe? They seem like they would have stored more stuff there.” Alisha nodded, fingers moving across her keyboard to pull up Parker Pharmaceutical's website in one tab and a Google search for the company in a second. "Intern being yelled at and new enough to not know what to do? Sounds good to me. I'll take Parker and you can do something similar for Garrick?" She opened up a word document and began copying things from the website into it. "We have to sound convincing though, so I'm going to find as much info about their structure and employees as I can so I can namedrop and not get caught not knowing something simple." She shook her head. "I've seen too many movies about that." “Impersonating employees, using a burner phone, digging up info on potentially shady companies…” Eve opened up her own word document and began to copy and paste names of various lawyers from the Garrick, Allen, and West site. “Yep, this is definitely one of my top five favorite slumber parties.” Ten minutes later, Eve had compiled a list of several lawyers and employees of the firm, along with phone numbers, job skills, nicknames, and whatever else she could find on LinkedIn and Facebook. “Okay, I think I’m good for Garrick,” Eve told Alisha, “What about you? You ready to make the call? We should probably only pretend to be from one company tonight. I only have the one burner phone, and Richards could have caller ID.” "Yeah, I think I'm ready. We can call Parker today and Garrick tomorrow? It'd be better to get a different employee there anyway, and if I mess it up today we can just figure out what we need to know for tomorrow." Picking up the burner phone, she scooted closer to Eve so the other woman could hear, and dialed the number for the warehouse. Okay Alisha, just act like you know they already have a unit there, and go from there. A gruff voice answered after two rings. "Richard's Warehouse, this is Mark." "Hi," Alisha exclaimed brightly. "I need to ship a couple of boxes to the warehouse, and I think we already have that set up? And then, I know I have to put the unit number on the UPS label, but do I just put the company name or the name of the person meeting the boxes — which I think is me but might be the other assistant here — I'm not actually sure yet?" "Hold on, hold on," came the crackly voice over the phone. "You're talking just the ship-to-warehouse and not a freight shipment, right?" "Yeah. My boss has a few boxes he needs in the warehouse and said we can just mail it by UPS. Your website says—" "Okay, okay, what's the company name?" "Parker Pharmaceuticals. Or maybe it's under Robert St. Onge?" "All right, yeah. It's under Parker. The paperwork's on file. But whoever's coming to receive the packages has to be on the form too because of the agreement — what's your name?" Alisha's eyes widened slightly and she looked over at Eve, mouthing the word 'agreement' Then she looked down quickly at her word file where she'd (thankfully) already come up with a generic name. "Tina. Cohen. I doubt I'm on there though, this is my second week." She paused. "And sorry, the shipping agreement?" Eve lay her head down on the coffee table, stifling a giggle. "No," the man said. "The NDA, since uhhhh" he drew out his words, like he was looking through the paperwork on his screen. "Since this is all the stuff you're keeping off official records." Alisha's eyes widened again and she sat up a little bit, excitedly, pointing to the phone. This was working! "Oh, right, of course. Okay, I'll make sure we update the paperwork I'm coming to pick it up. I can fax it in, right?" "Yup." "Great, okay. Thank you so much." "No problem, let me know if you have any other questions." "I will, thanks. Bye." Hanging up, she let out a huge grin. As Eve heard the tell-tale click of the phone conversation ending, she looked up. “So,” she said, “how was your first time taking stock of inventory, Tina?” Alisha shook her head slowly in disbelief. "I can't believe that worked," she said, a rare smile on her face. Reaching over, she held up her hand for a high-five. "So Parker Pharmaceuticals is storing stuff off the record at the warehouse. It's amazing how having some of the right information and playing dumb can get you so far." She grinned again. "Thank you for having the burner phone, you're amazing." "And you get to do the next one." “‘Most Amazing,’ definitely should have been my yearbook superlative,” Eve said as she high-fived back. “I’ll call Garrick tomorrow, on a new burner phone.” Eve rested her head in hand. “So, Parker Pharmaceuticals is hiding things in Richards Storage Facility? What would they have been working on that would have gotten APEX’s interest? Some kind of--” Bzzt! Eve Arthur’s real phone buzzed on the coffee table. It was message from the front desk, Red Dragon Delivery had finally arrived. “Well, I guess we can develop that conspiracy theory after we eat,” Eve said, pushing herself up. “Besides, chopsticks come in handy when you’re making a mind map.” |
