Who: Cody Sykes [BAROMETER] and Danica Chae [SQUID].
Where: Cody’s Apartment -> The Atrium
When: August 5.
What: Shark shows up at Cody’s door.
Warnings: None.
For the past month Cody had been having Ariel problems. Well, if he’d be a bit more honest with himself he could admit that he’d been having Ariel problems since Ariel broke up with him. But he’d hit a wave of intenseness as her birthday had creeped closer. Every time he went outside of the DMS he saw something that reminded him of her or that he thought would be a good gift. Even when he was in the commissary he’d see something, think about how it’d be a good gift for Ariel and then try to convince himself out of it. Tonight he knew Ariel was having her party. Because word always travels around the DMS at the speed of light. Even if they had been strangers, Cody would have likely found out about it. He wanted to maintain a friendship with her but he was also cognizant of the fact that this was a boundary he wasn’t meant to cross. She still wasn’t exactly friendly over the network. He absolutely could not leave his room an pop by, even if he could hear the echo of the party since he lived just down the hall. It was a bad idea and one he was not going to entertain. Instead of entertaining that idea he paced in his kitchen, until there was a scratch at his door. Danica chased the dog down the hall, feeling something like deja vu from her second year at college before she started looking after Tanner. She’d had a miniature pinscher then too, but she had let a neighbour take her when her brother came to live with her. It wasn’t a hard decision, she’d do anything for her brother. Yes, including adopting a new miniature pinscher when he’d found out that she used to have one. So here she was, with her brother, chasing down the dog. “Shark, what are you doing?” Tanner called as the dog stopped and started pawing at a door. Dani continued regretted the day she let Tanner name their pet. The dog didn’t seem to want to leave the door, so Dani picked her up from from where she was sitting and ignored her whine of protest. She was going to have to have another talk with Tanner about leaving the door open and letting Shark escape. But just as she was about to walk away, the door to the apartment opened. Cody was both surprised and not surprised to see Dani, Tanner and Shark, a dog he knew quite well. Shark had a habit of either finding his way to Cody’s door or being led there by one of his students. He suspected that when Shark had homework in his mouth it meant the second was likely true.“Hi Dani, Tanner, Shark.” He reached over so that he could pet Shark. The interruption was a welcome distraction though. Cody asked, “What brings you to my neck of the woods?” “Heeyy,” Dani said, drawing out the vowel and looking sheepish, “So this little guy here always seems to run to your door, I’m starting to think there’s a reason for this.” She gave Tanner a pointed look, she had a feeling it had something to do with his schoolwork. “But Daaaani,” Tanner looked back up at her with a pout, “Everyone knows that that’s what dogs are for, right Mr. Sykes? ‘Sides, I bet she just always wants to come here cause he gives her treats. ” “I knew she was getting spoiled somewhere,” Dani turned back to Cody, “But please tell me you don’t actually let my menace of a little brother get away with not doing his homework properly.” Cody smiled at Dani’s reaction, trying to assure her without any words that he wasn’t bothered by the visit at all. He turned his head to look down at Tanner when his student spoke to him. “I don’t think stuffing homework in a dog’s mouth is good for your noggin or Shark’s stomach,” he stated good-naturedly. He looked back over at Dani when she spoke. “Oh, no, I am the strictest teacher ever,” he joked. Becoming a bit more serious, he added, “Tanner just seems to love completing his homework during class breaks. Hopefully he’ll do a bit less of that this year though.” Cody crossed his fingers. Tanner wrinkled his nose, “She doesn’t actually eat my homework.” Dani laughed and pat her brother on the head, “That’s probably because Shark’s better behaved than you are.” Tanner just crossed his arms and huffed indignantly. “Tanner and I were just going to take Shark for a little walk. We might not be allowed outside but that doesn’t mean we can’t get some exercise,” She smiled back at Cody, not surprised that Tanner spoke so fondly of him, “You’re welcome to join us if you’re not busy.” The choice of wallowing and listening to the echo of Ariel’s party or going on a walk was a pretty easy decision to make. “A walk sounds great, let me just get my ID.” He clipped on his identification badge that he retrieved from the kitchen table. When he joined them back in the hallway he smiled. “What’s your usual route?” “Well Shark and I usually come here,” Tanner pipes up before Dani can answer, “But Dani usually just goes wherever she wants to.” Danica flushed, that wasn’t exactly true. She just liked to switch it up every so often, there were only so many places you could end up in a facility, “I just don’t want Shark to get bored, where do you usually go when you need a break?” Cody laughed at Tanner but was unsurprised by his answer. “Of course you do,” he commented before turning his attention to Dani, “I’m a big fan of the atrium, myself. But, uh, well, I know some people don’t like that it’s artificial.” He shrugged his shoulders. “I’m up for anything.” “Atrium sounds good,” Dani agreed and started walking towards the indoor garden, “It is a little depressing I guess, but it’s better than nothing right?” She was a beta which meant that she ordinarily wouldn’t be able to get many days on the outside, if any. Being an operative meant that she at least got to leave the facility once in a while. She tried to stay positive about this whole situation, but being cooped up all the time would get the best of anyone. Cody led the way to the Atrium. It really didn’t bother him, but he understand that there were people who were far more restricted than he was. He could understand how hard it was for people to be frustrated that they only ever could experience that as ‘outside’. “Yes,” Cody agreed with Dani. “It’s definitely better than nothing. And it’s well tended to. Where else are you going to see full blooming flowers during every season of the year?” “It really is, huh?” She nodded appreciatively, every time she visited the Atrium she thought that she should visit the Atrium more often, “I didn’t know you liked flowers so much, do you come here often?” “Oh, I mean, I don’t really know much about flowers,” he clarified, “But, I like seeing them around. I guess I come here a bit?” Cody wasn’t sure what she might consider often, but he also had the good fortune of being a delta who could explore the outside world a bit more than other Meta’s. “But don’t ask me any questions about what’s in the atrium. I have absolutely no green thumb and would just have to make up stuff. But, if you ever have weather questions, I can definitely answer those,” he offered. “Isn’t there a unit on flowers or something in the curriculum, Mr. Sykes? I vaguely remember having to learn about plants,” Dani elbowed him lightly in jest, “I’m just teasing, I know a lot of facts about sharks but other than that I’ve basically given back everything school ever taught me.” |
