Rachel couldn't figure out whether she was going to be happy to see her cousin again or sick to her stomach. She loved him, of course. He was family. But that didn't change the fact that the last she remembered, she had been sent to kill her other cousin -- Jake's older brother. The one person that she knew Jake had tried so hard to save and in the end, it all fell apart. The one person she knew she had managed to actually kill because she had decided to find that book and read it herself.
And that was how she was fully aware of everything Jake must have been feeling.
She had made her way down to Cassie's floor but the second she stepped out of the elevator, it had seemed like her legs were made of lead. Rachel tried to tell herself that it'll be okay, and they'll have a nice happy family reunion, and there will be hugs and anything but crying because she couldn't remember when was the last time she cried in front of Jake. But she wasn't stupid. She knew that it was very possible that he wouldn't even jump to hugging her that quickly. Rachel was supposed to be dead. In his life, especially. And after the years of war they had to endure, the strangers they had met along the way, how was he going to believe it was really her?
Rachel sighed. And reached the door anyway, even if she felt like she was slowing down with every step. She could hear the voices already and felt a tightening in her chest, realizing that he was already there. Figures because she was a few minutes late, but she had still hoped that she'd get a bit of alone time with Cassie before seeing him. So much for that, she thought, as she reached up and knocked on the door.
