Who: Ethan Chandler and Vanessa Ives
What: Nursing wounds
When: A bit after the event.
Where: Vanessa's room
Rating: TBD, talk of injuries
Status: Incomplete

During the ensuing fight with the monster that had previously been an old man asking for help, Vanessa had been more injured than she had originally thought. It wasn't really a surprise. He had asked her to gather people into the room and she had done that. Then when he had transformed into that thing, she had been the one to take the most damage while trying to get people to safety. Thankfully taking the thing down hadn't cost anyone their lives. Once again she had fought bravely beside Ethan Chandler. At least this place was a little bit like home in that way.

She had been seen by the doctors and patched up as most as they could. Things were worse than she had thought they were. Real actual damage. It required her to stay in bed for a while. Vanessa swore that she spent most of her time in bed. In any case, she was lying in bed and waiting for her knight in shining armor to bring her something to read and possibly something to eat, if it could be managed.

Ethan hadn't escaped the fight unscathed, but he wasn't nearly as banged-up as Vanessa, either, and he'd fought hurt before, with worse injuries than this. He'd patched himself up after they'd got Vanessa to safety, probably incurring the wrath of the doctors for not going to them, but hell, they had worse off people to worry about. The day he couldn't fight with a couple of cracked ribs and some bruises was the day he hung up his guns for good.

Things were quiet now, at least, in the aftermath; he could spend some time making Vanessa some soup and finding a decent-looking book for her. He still wasn't entirely sure of her tastes in that direction -- their time together hadn't included enough leisure time that they'd spent hours discussing their literary preferences -- so he grabbed a couple, figuring at least one would suit, and stuck them on the tray with the bowl of soup and plate of bread and butter. Simple food, easy to keep down.

"Hey," he said, giving her a smile as he nudged the door open with his hip. "How're you feeling?"

While she wasn't exactly sick, she supposed that it could be worse than soup to mend her body. There should have been some kind of person that healed injuries like this. In this place there had to be someone with that sort of powers. There were so many different kinds of people that it seemed silly that there was no one to wave a magic wand and make all of this go away.

Still it was nice of him to bring her soup while she was stuck in bed and probably not going anywhere any time soon. She should have asked for a cheeseburger. It was an American thing and a modern thing, but they were pretty tasty. Not that she was going to tell him that she secretly liked modern American food. Far from it.

When the door opened, she smiled tiredly. "Like I've been run over by a horse and carriage, if you must know. How about you? You don't look too worse for wear."

"A bit beat up, but nothing I haven't dealt with before," Ethan said, putting the tray on the table beside the bed and dragging a chair over so he could sit and talk to her.

"I'll make you something a bit heartier once I've had a chance to restock," he added. God knew it wasn't his idea of a satisfying meal, even if it was one that was decent for when you couldn't get out of bed, but old habits died hard, and he'd grown up with the belief that convalescents got soup. "I'll go to the clinic in a bit, get them to check and make sure nothing's too bad, but it feels all right. Maybe some cracked ribs at the worst, and I've had those before. Nothing's been speared inside, so I'm good."

Vanessa was clearly relieved to hear that it was just her that had been injured and not him. "I believe that too much of our relationship has been with me in a bed, and you sitting beside me, trying to make me feel better." Or rather exorcise demons out of her, whichever it was. There was an awful lot of it, and it was getting to be a bit tiresome. Though as long as he was here, it wasn't so bad.

"I would prefer it if you went to one of those fancy fast food places. I have to admit that I'm getting used to them. It's a travesty, but it does make food faster than trying to cook. And neither of us is all that good at it. No offense," she teased slightly. It would make them both feel better. He wouldn't have to cook, and she could actually eat something decent that wasn't soup. "Thank you for helping me. Helping all of us. Again."

"It's been a pattern of late," he remarked, a hint of sorrow and barely-repressed anger slipping into his tone. He'd spent Brona's last days sitting beside her, trying to make her feel better, and when he'd thought he was bringing help, Frankenstein had -- but he shook his head sharply, banishing that thought. No need to dwell on it right now.

At the mention of their combined lack of cooking ability, he chuckled, shaking his head again, and said, "No offence taken. I can handle this sort of thing," with a wave at the soup, "but much more complicated and it gets muddled. I'll bring you back something from one of the fast food places in the morning."

"I know, and for that I'm sorry." Whether or not it was her fault that she was constantly in bed was a moot point. Knowing everything that had happened, she wouldn't have blamed him for being disgusted with the whole thing. A very large part of her was sad to ever include Frankenstein on their endeavor, knowing now what he was capable of. Of course the fact remained that all of them in their own way was just as messed up and had done awful things.

She smiled at him. "I appreciate that. Hopefully I won't be in this bed for too long." Not if she had anything to say about it. Vanessa had a strong head and even if doctors told her to stay in bed, she wouldn't. "Hopefully this will be the last set of monsters we have to deal with in a while." Doubtful, but she could hope.

"Don't be sorry. It's hardly your fault," Ethan told her. The Doctor's choices were his own, and Ethan wasn't going to cast blame on Vanessa for them any more than he blamed anyone but himself for his own actions. People made their choices and had to live with them.

Frankenstein would just be sorry if he ever showed up here.

"Give yourself a day or two," he advised, even as he acknowledged to himself that advising Vanessa Ives to take it easy was an exercise in futility. "We might not be facing all that many actual monsters, but life in this century's pretty exciting all the same."

"Still. Despite all of that, I truly am sorry." She wasn't sure what would happen if the man showed up here. She didn't want to have to break something up. Especially since Ethan would tear him to pieces. Literally. She didn't even know how to feel about the man herself. All of those things she'd shared with him and he was doing.. that.

Vanessa made a bit of a noise of protest. "A day or two? I suppose." Though she wasn't going to sit around and do nothing if she had any say in it. At least he knew better than to think that she was going to just lie in bed for the whole time.

"I guess exciting is one way to put it. I have a feeling we will be dealing with more monsters though." There were always monsters, even if most of them were actual human beings. "Now what are we to do while I eat this awful soup and you're keeping an eye on me to make sure I don't do anything rash."

"Just a day or two," Ethan said, chuckling. "I'm not going to try to keep you in bed any longer than that. You want something productive to do or you want me to bring over some cards and chips so we can play poker? I may not be high society's idea of a catch but I can be decent company."

Of course, high society didn't know about his parentage, but he preferred it that way. There were fewer expectations that he could never live up to. Just being a friend and providing company for the few days he was able to convince her to take it easy was plenty.

"If you end the sentence at day, then I think we have an agreement," she said rather hotly. For his sake, she would stay in bed the rest of the day, but then after that, she had things to do. She had to go back to work. Sadly all of her work had to be done actually at work so doing any of that productive stuff was for the birds.

Vanessa smiled at him, "I'll have you know, that I have not been high society in quite some time. And you're always a catch, Mr. Chandler. I'd be happy to play cards with you. If you're lucky, you'll even win a hand or two." If sitting around and doing nothing meant she got his attention for a while and the two of them could just be there together, then she could gladly take it.

"Bed for a day, take it a bit easier for the second," Ethan bargained, giving Vanessa a grin. He wasn't expecting her to stay down and docile, after all, but there was sense in letting herself mend for a little bit. "I'd be a mite offended if I went to the trouble of looking out for you and you went and got yourself hurt just as you'd been put back together."

His tone was light, for all the subject was somewhat serious. They knew each other well enough for that now, and he wasn't going to make her do anything she really didn't want to do. Getting the cards and the pack of little round discs he'd found at a game store, he pulled his chair closer to the bed so they could play properly.

She gave a slight huff, but she didn't actually disagree. So that was something. Still she wasn't in very good shape. "Offended? Well we certainly can't have that. I'd be all right with maybe a bit of a chastising, but not being offended. I can scarcely take it."

She was glad that this banter between them hadn't gone anywhere. Their surroundings might have changed completely, but they hadn't and that was comforting. Slowly she sat up, only wincing slightly so that she could start to play cards with him. And maybe let him even win.
