Solas stood in the middle of the living room of his apartment and looked around. He’d just spent the last half hour or so moving all of the furniture out of the way and warding the room thoroughly. He didn’t think anyone would be able to determine what he was doing but he had long ago learned to be cautious. The sole remaining mage here from his world was a human so it wasn’t likely she would be attuned to such deeply Elvhen magic that he was about to use. He wasn’t inclined to take chances however and his wards should stop any magic in the room from leaking out to be noticed by others. He picked his orb up from where he’d left it on the table and placed it on the floor in the middle of the room. He then stopped and closed his eyes. What happened next was almost entirely internal, as he essentially opened up a box which had been sealed since he walked into Haven and offered his services to the Inquisition. What was in that box was… himself – his true self – and he let that flow. The change wasn’t external, it was nearly all internal as the part of him that was Fen’Harel was re-established. When he opened his eyes, there was no trace of the slightly deferential, elven apostate. Fen’Harel stretched and smiled lazily. It had been too long since he had been himself. He sobered again as he looked down at the orb at his feet. Such trouble he had caused. He hadn’t intended it but what was it that the shemlen said about good intentions and where they lead? It was why he had drawn Solas around him and gone to the Inquisition. Unlike many of his kin, if he made a mistake, he did what he could to fix it. Which could easily be said to be why he’d made the mistake of giving his orb to Corypheus in the first place. He had woken from the Uthenera to find that the People had been brought about as low as it was possible to be. It had not been his intention. He had wanted to free them from the growing tyranny of his kin. Slavery! He snarled, an oddly canine… even lupine… sound. What had his kin been thinking with that! Since when did they enslave their own people? He shook the thought away and picked up the orb. That wasn’t what this was about. He needed to lock the orb’s minimal power away so that no one else could use it as Corypheus had done. This world knew of it and what it was. He could not risk the wrong people getting their hands on it. He let his magic flow from him. This wasn’t the magic he used as Solas. This was ancient Elvhen magic that sang in beautiful brilliant tones through the room. It was slow and elegant, requiring nothing in the way of hurry or flair or flashy moves. The words he spoke were at times sonorous, at times lyrical and at times of a beauty that was beyond description. Hours passed as he weaved his spell but he did not notice. The spell formed in tendrils that surrounded the orb and drew it from his hand to hover in the air in front of him. Every word drew more tendrils around the orb until it was surrounded with a pale golden glow. He then paused and spoke a single word, accompanying it with a complicated movement of both hands. “Fen’Harel.” The glow brightened to an almost painful level then faded into nothing as it closed around the orb. Fen’Harel reached out one hand and the orb dropped into it. He tested his spellwork and smiled with satisfaction. The spell had worked. The power within the orb was sealed away, locked behind a wall that on he, Fen’Harel, could breach. As Solas, he would not be able to touch it. The orb was safe, as he had promised Ellana. He placed the orb on the floor and closed his eyes again, reversing the process to put himself in a box. When he opened his eyes again, Fen’Harel was once again gone and Solas stood in his place. He staggered momentarily, the exhaustion of using such strong and ancient magic without easy access to the Fade catching up with him. He leaned down, picked up the orb and took it into his bedroom. He needed sleep for now and when he woke, he would eat, return his apartment to rights and find a good place to hide the orb. |
