What: Anakin has a question for his Uncle.
Rating: Low.
Status: COMPLETE.
Mostly Anakin Solo tried not to think too much about what would happen if he started losing the people closest to him - Rikki, Jaina, his Uncle, even Steve had become this person who had shown interest in his life and had accepted and provided advice and a shoulder multiple times when Anakin had needed it, and other family - it was weird enough at times to consider those who had been there and left, and then returned - forcing him to re-evaluate and re-make friendships and relationships where he'd once had them before. It did create shifts in his self, and so far no one had created quite the shift that his brother's disappearance had - it had literally pushed him forward into a life that when he stopped to think about it very much, was way more adult than he would have ever considered himself being at the eleventh hour of being 17. Then again, he would have never imagined that he would spend the years between 15 and 17 being forced to make such impossible decisions and thrust into a place of leadership. The thing was, although he could have never imagined himself engaged at 17 and ready to marry at 18, it didn't feel impossible or wrong. If anything it was precisely the opposite. Marrying Rikki felt like the easiest decision he'd ever made, and as much as was possible, he wanted his family to be involved in that. And as much as the tesseract allowed for - they would be. Truthfully, Anakin Solo liked to find ways to bring people together. And this was part of that. It was this quest that brought him to stand in front of his Uncle's door - a visitor at the apartment he'd once considered home. While Anakin suspected that his Uncle wouldn't mind if he just barged in, he stopped and knocked and waited. He could have done this over the network - but he didn't really want to. His Uncle had been his Jedi Master and his Uncle continued to be a source of support and wisdom - someone who knew better than almost anyone else, what the future held, and who was willing to help Anakin use that information to create a future here - a future he would never have at home. He reached a hand up and ran fingers through his hair and then stuffed said hand back in his pockets. The apartment didn’t feel the same once Anakin had officially moved out. Before there was still a sense of him there even when he was elsewhere, his things were there, but now the room that had been his was empty. Luke knew he would have to figure out what to do with it unless he was assigned another roommate but he hoped that wouldn’t be the case. He should look into how you went about requesting that you not have a roommate or getting a one bedroom. He was actually in the empty bedroom meditating when he heard the knock on the door. Reaching out with the Force to see who it was, he smiled when he realized it was his nephew. It had been a few days since they’d talked so he got up and went to the door, throwing it open with a smile. “Hey,” he said. “it’s good to see you. What’s up?” "Hey," Anakin offered his Uncle a large smile as the door was opened. Truth was that there was a part of him that had enjoyed living with his Uncle and kind of missed it. Rikki hadn't been wrong that he'd liked the opportunity to be closer to his Uncle here. It had felt more like home because of Luke's offer of his room and his company in those early months. Yes, it had definitely had its awkward moments too - Jacen on the couch when Anakin really hadn't wanted to talk to him, being asked to leave when Carol was over, and trying to figure out how to spend time with Rikki when there hadn't been any place that was just his - but it had mostly been good, and there was a part of him that would always miss that close proximity. He stepped into the apartment and glanced around. It had been home, it sort of still was, but it also wasn't, and it had that weird feeling of being not his place anymore - just his Uncle's - and it wasn't a completely unusual feeling, but Anakin couldn't help but note it. "Do you have a minute or two? I just - had some stuff I wanted to talk to you about and I figured I'd come do it in person rather than over the network." “Sure. I’ve always got time for you,” Luke waved toward the living room. “have a seat. Can I get you something to drink or anything?” It was good seeing him there again, Luke had enjoyed getting to know his nephew in a way that he wouldn’t get to back home. Things had been awkward at times of course but he’d come to see that in many ways, Anakin was a lot like him. In some respects, he could see more of himself in his nephew than he had seen in his son for the brief time he’d been there. Ben was much more like his mother than his father although he had seen parts of himself in the young man. Anakin shrugged lightly and shook his head as he took a seat on the sofa. "Nah, I'm fine. Thanks though." There was a part of Anakin that still wasn't entirely certain that he wasn't just dreaming this life. He knew it wasn't the case, but the fact that Rikki had said yes to him, that they were going to get married, and the conversations they'd had about it thus far still felt surreal. And while he'd said he wasn't in any rush to get married - and really, he wasn't - it also felt ridiculous to put it off. They were here, they might not be here next year, and even if they were here next year, what was the point in putting it off when they were sharing an apartment and a life? When he already talked to her about everything and consulted her for plans for his future? "So, Rikki and I are talking about wedding stuff. Like, when and what and all of that. And I wanted to ask you… I mean, I was hoping you'd be willing to consider anyway… We need someone to officiate the ceremony. And obviously we could find someone here, probably, but Rikki and I were hoping you'd be willing to do that for us." Luke sat down in his usual chair and looked over at his nephew, listening to what he had to say. For a moment, he couldn’t say anything, he was too overwhelmed with emotion but he cleared his throat and nodded. “Of course, I’d be honored…..thank you…” The request meant more to Luke than Anakin could possibly know. They’d had a rough patch but had gotten through it and the fact that his nephew wanted to include him on the most important day of his life by having him conduct the ceremony, well Luke was serious when he said he’d be honored. “How does that work here exactly?” he asked. “If we were at home, I could do it if you had a Jedi ceremony since I’m a Master but that’s probably not legal here. What do I have to do? Get a license?” Luke knew a bit about the customs of the world but marriage wasn’t one of them. He’d been to Sam and Veronica’s wedding but he didn’t remember who had officiated it. “When is the wedding? I take it you’ve set a date?” Anakin flashed his Uncle the largest of grins. He hadn't really expected him to say no, and in fact had expected him to say yes - but it was still nice to have the words actually said and the decision actually to be known as yes. "Apparently you have to fill out some forms, and then they give you a registration or something. If you're willing then I'll send you the information. There seem to be websites," he added. The date was a different matter though, and to be honest, it was something Anakin felt a little lost with. He wasn't entirely certain what Rikki wanted, and he wasn't entirely certain how to do a wedding here. He remembered his Uncle's wedding to his Aunt Mara - ironically better than his Uncle might - and he'd seen weddings on television here, so he had some ideas - but nothing certain. "Well, I mean, sort of - we were thinking sometime this autumn. Originally I was thinking sometime next year, but in some ways it felt weird to wait that long. We don't have an exact date yet. I think we both want something small and semi-informal. Just family and close friends - whomever is here at the time. I don't really know what I'm doing," he shrugged. "And Rikki doesn't seem to have a strong opinion on it, so - I don't know exactly." “I can do that, it doesn’t seem like it’s too hard or takes too long,” Luke replied. “so just send me what you have and I’ll get started on it.” He was genuinely happy for Anakin and Rikki and while it was true that they were young, they’d both lived through more hardship than a lot of people saw in a lifetime. They were mature beyond their years and Luke knew that they truly loved each other. “I know nothing about wedding planning,” he said with a laugh. “or what goes into it. I have resisted the temptation to look up anything about my own wedding. I was tempted when I first found out but I decided it was better not to know.” Luke looked at his nephew. “You were there I’m sure, just tell me one thing. I didn’t do anything stupid like forget my own name or trip over my shoes or anything like that, did I?” "Done," Anakin said. And it wouldn't take him very long, he knew. It should be pretty simple to get his Uncle having the right credentials. Probably if Jedi were an official, recognized religion it wouldn't even be necessary but that wasn't going to be an option, so they'd go about it another way. "I don't think you did anything like that," Anakin shrugged, a mischievous twinkle in his eye. "I mean, pretty much I was only there for the cake and to hear Dad complain about his new clothes. You seemed pretty happy though." He leaned forward, his elbows on his knees and he sighed. 'I'm just feeling weird, a little I guess. I don't know if she's cool with me making stuff up - I've never been to an Earth wedding - or if she wants to have a greater part, but when I ask it doesn't get much in the way of response, so it's been weird. But it'll be fine. I'm sure." “I’m sure your dad was complaining about his clothes,” Luke laughed. “and hey the cake is the best part.” He thought for a moment about what Anakin said about the wedding.”I’ve been to one Earth wedding, Sam Winchester’s, and it was very personal. What I mean is that everything about it involved things that meant something to them. From the date to the place it was held, it was uniquely them.” It had been a lovely ceremony but sadly Veronica had been taken not long after. Luke hoped that same thing didn’t happen to Anakin or Rikki. “Maybe Rikki would like to talk to a girl? I know her best friend is gone but there are people from her world that she might be close to?” Luke shrugged. “I think that most important thing is that it be what the two of you want it to be. Celebrate yourselves, both as individuals and as a couple.” He grinned. “Hey that wasn’t half bad, maybe I should write that down and use it.” "You should," Anakin grinned at his Uncle. It was a good point though and Anakin realized that in their own way that had been what he and Rikki had been doing. Something small, something with family and friends, something simple and not overly fancy - it was - really that was what they both wanted. Anything super ornate or fancy wouldn't have been like either of them. "And you've got a point. We'll figure it out, and I think personal is a good idea - thanks for helping us out on that." |
