Who: Tony Stark & Edwin Jarvis
When: Wednesday Night
Where: Starting at SWORD Tesseract Arrivals, finishing at Potts Tower
What: Tony steps out to go get Jarvis, but he's driving
Rating: PG
Tony assumed that it would be near impossible for Jarvis to miss a McLaren F1. But that wasn't why he picked it. He also hadn't chosen it because it was impressive, flashy or obtrusive. He'd chosen the car because it was armour. It was bright and red and distracted from the man inside, and it was just pretty enough to distract Stark from himself. Because this brief jaunt from Stark Tower to the SWORD arrivals centre felt like probably the longest car ride he'd ever taken. His birthday had been a few days ago, and his father had written him a nice letter admitting that he'd missed his life; admitting that even when he'd get the chance to see it, he wouldn't take it properly, and apologising for that. He'd also told him how happy he was, really, that they'd managed to make something work here, even though it was weird and different and not familiar in the family sense of the word. But Tony had been able to deal with that. In part, really, because getting to know Howard now, he was getting know his father for the very first time. There was no before. His Dad had always been a stranger. Sometimes feared, always adored, but a mystery. Growing up, Howard had been nothing more to Tony than the Wizard of OZ was to Dorothy. But the two years (and change) they'd had here had given Anthony the chance to look behind the curtain for the first time, and get to know the person that - really - Howard had always been afraid to show him in the first place. It had taken time, and it hadn't been easy and still wasn't, but they were working on it and Tony was grateful for the chance, even if he'd never admit it. But Jarvis. That was different. It was really fucking different. Jarvis was the first person that Tony had ever loved, who had loved him back. He'd been his first friend, his first confidant, and the first person he'd turned to when he was hurt, alone or scared. He'd never mocked him for his tears, he'd never expected him to be more than his best, he'd just loved him and Tony cherished every minute, every memory, and ever scrap of advice that Edwin had given him, over the years. But the man he was about to meet and set up in his tower was not yet the Jarvis he knew, and the relationship they'd formed over decades didn't even exist to him. It was like some kind of sick joke, to look at a person he felt so much for, and be greeted like a stranger. But he could handle it. He could wear a crooked smile, a casual shrug and sunglasses at night and get through this the same was he faced crowds; the same way he faced the world. And even though it hurt, even though he wanted desperately to tell Edwin that he knew him, and couldn't -- the other thing he couldn't do was let anyone else be here in his place. Happy Hogan had offered to take this trip over to get Jarvis, and he hadn't let him. He had a responsibility to this man, even if Edwin didn't know it yet, and he was going to make sure he was safe, well cared for and protected -- even if it killed him. He pulled up to the entrance, radio blaring bass into the night, and he chewed on his bottom lip as he waited for Jarvis to step out of the building. |
