At first he wasn't sure what he'd felt. The sensation had been quick as if a light had been turned off but then there was emptiness and Luke knew what had happened. He opened his eyes and immediately glanced to his left. Carol was still there, sleeping peacefully and he breathed a sigh of relief. He hadn't really expected her to be gone since what he had felt had to have come from someone who was Force sensitvie and that could only mean one thing. Someone from his world was gone. Luke slipped out of bed, careful not to wake Carol. She didn't get enough rest as it was in his opinion though he wouldn't tell her that and right now he needed to be alone. Padding into the living room on bare feet, he walked to the window and looked out. Taking a deep breath, he closed his eyes and stretched out with the Force, searching for the presence of those he knew. It didn't take long to find it and with a sigh, Luke opened his eyes. Jacen was gone. Running a hand through his hair he sighed and let his thoughts drift to his nephew. Not the grown man who had been here who had destroyed so many lives but to the little boy that he remembered. Luke thought about all the times he'd played with Jacen and Jaina, how he'd always been amazed at how different the two of them were even though they were almost one person. He'd often wondered if he and Leia would have been that way if they'd been allowed to grow up together but that was something he would never know. He thought back to the day that Jacen had arrived here, the day he'd been called to Abigail Brand's office and given a file. The file that told him things that he never wanted to think about. The pain of learning Mara's fate still hurt, it would always hurt but Luke knew that he couldn't change what was to happen in their world or what had in fact already happened in the time that Jacen came from. Could he have done something, said something to his nephew that would have made a difference? No matter how many times he'd asked himself that question, no matter how many times he'd been told that no it wasn't his fault, part of Luke still blamed himself. The man that had been here though, he'd gotten past that, he was trying to make a life for himself and Luke wished that he could have done more to help him. They'd spent hours talking and while they'd found some common ground and though there had been forgiveness on both sides, Luke still wasn't sure that anything had changed. Jacen had kept himself closed off from everyone, even his twin, and Luke wondered if any of them had really known the man who had lived with them for these several months. His presence here had caused all of them to question and some of the questions Luke had asked himself had been difficult ones to ask. In the end though, facing Jacen, knowing what he'd done, Luke knew that it was something he'd been meant to face even though he wouldn't remember any of this if he were sent back. Turning away from the window, he glanced toward the bedroom where Carol slept and sighed. Things in this world were so uncertain but he wasn't sorry that he had given in to his feelings for Carol. Time was precious and no matter what world you lived in, you were only given so much. This time was theirs and Luke didn't want to waste any of it. He knew that Carol had read his file, but those were only words, there were still things he hadn't talked to her about. One of those things was Jacen and his feelings about his nephew. It was too raw and too fresh when he'd first started seeing her and she was still recovering from her own trauma. Now though he'd come to see how strong she was and he admired that about her. She'd shown him that he could trust her when his father had arrived, she'd come to him and had listened to him and offered him comfort. Luke was always quick to offer support to others but accepting it for himself was difficult for him. Right now he was struggling with that but he knew what he needed to do. With a final glance toward the window and a silent goodbye to his nephew, Luke walked back into the bedroom and slipped back into bed. Carol was awake and she looked at him with a raised eyebrow. Putting his arms around her, he pulled her close and quietly whispered "Jacen's gone." It was all he needed to say. |
