Since the Avengers meeting, and despite Pepper's insistence to do otherwise, Tony had probably slept less than twelve hours in total. He was powering through on the energy provided by a combination of the battery in his chest, various caffeine-infused beverages, and wine which might not exactly help, but he told himself it did. Thus far, he hadn't actually built anything. He and Bruce were still running simulations and trying to find a way to minimise damages as much as possible. The last thing he really wanted to do was to hurt anyone, but he knew it that realistically that would be unavoidable. It was a hard reality to face, but facing the destruction of the world was even harder. The last thing he wanted was to sacrifice innocent lives, it was the last thing he wanted to have to use this device and he hoped that they would find another way, or better yet, that they would pass whatever trials the Judge had in store for them, and they could calmly dismantle the bomb and pretend it never happened. But Steve was adamant about the fact they shouldn't face judgement unprepared. He didn't know what to do. The Bible had always prophesied that God would return one day to judge the quick and the dead. What was this, if nothing else? Knowing Thor and meeting Loki meant accepted the idea that the concept of God wasn't anything like it might be in Sunday School. And while he didn't know the history of the Celestials, it seemed safe to assume, from what Thor said, that they were as Godlike as it came. Tony had sent Bruce to bed not long ago. His fellow Avenger had seemed as committed to staying up with him as he was to doing his work, but he didn't want to burn Banner out. Besides, he got a bit temperamental without sleep, and the last thing he wanted to deal with was a Hulk unintentionally destroying whatever work they'd done already. So now he worked alone, incorporating the suggestions that Jasper had made last night into the simulations to see if it had any impact on reducing environmental impact. He stood back from the cascade of screens in front of him, glass of wine in hand, as he watched the simulations play out and wipe out every man, woman and child in Greenland. He watched as it poisoned the ocean. He watched as it threw currents out of whack, warmed the oceans and decimated the western coast of Africa with tidal waves and Tsunamis. And he drank. |
