This was complicated. For some time now, his feelings for Abbie had -- well, not changed exactly -- but grown. He loved her, and he'd watching their interactions on the show just put their interactions here in sharp relief. But he felt so much responsibility to the son that he had failed and the wife that had suffered so much because of what had happened that it was impossible for him to act upon his own instincts, as much as he might want to. And then he'd watched Katrina do what she did. He wasn't sure yet, if he blamed her for her actions or only added them to the list of things that he felt deeply responsible thing. He did accept that he had killed her, and that he'd chose to. He absolutely refused to let himself explain that away or make it palatable. He was a murderer. That was all. When Beverly had asked him if he was single, though, that had made him think. Because while he used his late wife as an explanation as to why he wasn't ready to pursue a romance, Katrina was not the first woman he thought of: It was Abbie. But he didn't know what he wanted or needed to do about that now. He knew he loved her, he knew they loved each other, but it felt too soon after the deal of his wife to act on anything they might be feeling. He did not want it to feel -- or to look to others -- like Katrina's death had anything to do with this. He wasn't clearing the way, he wasn't ending a marriage the only way that he could, given the circumstance. He was trying to save someone's life, he had to save Abbie's life, and that was all. But he also understood that if he was with Abbie, it would be impossible to separate the facts from the perspectives and his guilt would cling to him like tarnish on a silver tray. They could talk about it. They could talk all of it, because all that mattered was her and he didn't deserve to make and decisions about their future without her input and without knowing for certain what she wanted, and so he returned home to see her, and to have a conversation that in actuality, they'd probably been putting off for far too long. |
